Backstory:
- Grew up in Northumberland with its small family - youngest of two siblings, often babied as a result
- Along with being the youngest, it was also born blind, meaning that everyone treated it with kid gloves even as it grew up
- While Lochlan was rather content with this at first, every child does eventually get tired of this and it did too, sneaking off into well-worn places just to sit and be alone for a while
- Despite the drawbacks of being blind, it was a very sociable child, eager to talk to people and enjoyed being involved when possible
- Often ended up spending more time with animals than people however, because animals didn't just manhandle it or move it around without asking it
- Didn't really have a good relationship with its mother, who was often the one that pushed it in different ways based on how she viewed its blindness as a curse or a weakness, which led to more tension in the home the older it became
- Excelled in school, to the point where it managed to gain a scholarship to Cambridge (the Stormzy Scholarship, which is certainly a name for a scholarship) and took a degree in History
- While there, it met an individual named Myla Strauss, whose family is dedicated to researching The Fears — she, for some reason or other, decided to tell it all about The Fears and allowed it to become enveloped in her own research while she was forced to attend university 'for tradition'
- It became wrapped up in The Eye, impossibly caught up in the information and knowledge it was learning, all while becoming more and more terrified by what it was learning, and soon The Eye was offering more. Offering a chance of sight.
- It was never one to speak of its lack of sight as anything bad (everyone did that enough), but such an opportunity for sight — far more than sight — was something it could not pass up.
- It started with eye tattoos — all sorts, all in different styles, all over its body — the beginning of an offering in return for slight spatters of seeing things when The Eye wanted to tease it a little. Changing personality, more focused on consuming knowledge than helping those that Myla was researching into.
- It all culminated in a bloodsoaked bedroom floor, a knife sliced along the eye tattoos as though 'opening them' and a knife jammed into one of its eyes, death then rebirth in the grip of The Eye. The ability to see through eyes (tattoos, the damaged one, any eyes at all)
- Ended up in the Magnus Institute with Myla, collected one singular human (Emrys Beria, from Wales) to join their trio
Family:
Mother: Khadra Collings (deceased)
- Caring but rather overbearing
- Intensely worried for her children
- Outwardly affectionate
- Could cross boundaries accidentally
- Often dealt with cultural barriers, wanted to avoid that for her children
- Sought out community through the church
- Heavily religious, passed it onto her children
- Disappeared when Lochlan was sixteen (taken by The Lonely)
- Lochlan often regrets not being able to talk to her about their tension
Father: George Collings
- Cannot display affection very well
- Does care a lot for his children and family, but didn't grow up with an affectionate family
- Maintains an almost professional distance, much to everyone's dismay
- Did try and do the parental act sometimes
- Often shows love through meaningful gifts
- After Khadra died, he tried to reach out to his children more
- Is a very good listener
- Very proud of what his children have become, doesn't know how to say that
- Despite not being able to them about it, definitely brags about his children to his co-workers
Sister: Athena Collings (34)
- Took on the more lenient role in Lochlan's life
- Extremely supportive, taught it how to sneak out of the house without getting caught
- Was the rebellious child, argued with her mother a lot before she died
- Also rather intelligent, went to university and got a degree in biomedical sciences
- Keeps in contact with Lochlan, has no idea that its not blind anymore
- Never asks questions - shows up, does what's asked and jokes the whole way
- Does still talk to their father, she knows that he's trying his best now
- Lives with her wife, they're planning on adopting soon
- Taught Lochlan not to take shit from anyone
OKAY this is the final part of rambling about my Buried Avatar OC, Hester Ainsley, and part two of her backstory. The first part was about him as a general individual, and that's here. Anyway. FINAL PART.
Things got a bit hazy after that - he was safe, warm, the fog couldn't reach down in the mud, but they also couldn't breathe. The dirt began to fall into their mouth, their lungs, and somehow getting into their veins, more of it pumped around the body and dripping out of the holes on their face. They should have panicked, but, well, they didn't. Even when the dirt was it and it was the dirt, it did not panic. It just...drifted, letting the dirt become its bones and become its organs and its brain and it was the dirt and the dirt was it. What it did was a mixture of slumbering and just living, humanity distant and more of a dream than a real time in its life. It existed there for some amount of time. Who really knew? It didn't.
Up above, two centuries passed and ideas changed and The Fears took on more avatars and insidious plans were made and thwarted and it existed. The Magnus Institute was built, and time passed. Until, in the twenty first century, when Jonah Magnus (or whatever he went by at the time) found himself bored of having to find people who could handle the dangerous books stored within the Magnus Institute, and tugged on a few favours to get in contact with an old avatar. Simon Fairchild didn't quite know why the man had come to him for the information, but idly reminisced on that old friend he once had, a couple of centuries ago, that had always wanted to be a librarian. He was dead, Simon was su- what.
Cut to Peter Lukas - grey hair and grey eyes and no freckles - digging around in the forest surrounding one of the older estates belonging to the Lukases, Simon watching and trying to hide his anticipation behind idle jokes about Peter digging for nothing - until. Hester opened their eyes, coughing up dirt and feeling....nothing at all at her slumber being interrupted - it had happened sometimes over the time, yes, with curious adventurers and trespassers, but the issue was that they couldn't just snatch up these two like he had with those people, and that was interesting.
Their body was dirt and it took a moment to form it into a mimicry of humanity that he remembered, sitting up in the deep hole she found herself in and looking up at the two who had ruined his slumber. They recognised Simon even with how old he looked, but just being in his vicinity made her uncomfortable and wrong and dragged up some sort of feeling (anger, perhaps? It had been a while since they had felt), so they turned his attention to the other individual, and didn't recognise this one. Until Simon called out to Hester, introducing her to...Peter Lukas?
Their brain was dirt and memories were all vague and smushed together, but...he remembered someone called Peter Lukas. A friend? A close friend, certainly. And maybe those brightest blue eyes in her memory were affected by the dirt, and the ginger hair, and the freckles were all just distortions of memories. Well, that was something to ponder later. It was hard to grasp the passage of time, and they were still trying to work her brain to remember things, so it was hard to tell what had happened between being in the hole and looking at old friends, and being sat in a library with a signed contract and a book all about The Fears.
Well...he didn't know what was going on, but she knew how to work in libraries, and they relearned how to read to take in the information, and then those books fo The Fears did not affect them as a creature of the dirt. It wasn't long before he was making the space their own, the shelves closing in and the space becoming clogged with dirt, and...well, all he had to do was learn how to live again. Of course, the realisation of how trapped she was would come later, the utter fury at being trapped by someone he had thought to be her friend, unaware that the lies he had dealt her were far more severe.
If you didn't see my previous post, this is about my beautiful Buried Avatar OC, Hester! This part is focused on their backstory...I may have to cut this into two parts as well....sigh.
Hester's story started in the nineteenth century (1800s), with a Simon Fairchild pretending to be younger than the three centuries older he was (I think he ages physically slowly) and a Peter Lukas who was of the Lukas family, but was not the Peter Lukas from canon. Why would the Lukases put effort into naming their children when they can just reuse names from parents who cared about their children? Hester was a child that had all at once been both terrified and delighted by enclosed spaces. On one hand, small spaces meant privacy, they meant comfort and protection and safety - a place to hide, sometimes. On the other hand, they often also meant punishment, being locked away into dark spaces to think about her mistakes with bruises making every movement ache, blood leaving his clothes sticking to his skin and a dizziness he could never quite get rid of even in adulthood.
He could never quite tell whether he really liked small spaces, or if it had been a reflex to try and make their situation seem okay, to act like he didn't mind being trapped away, that he liked being put in the small cupboard where they kept all of their shoes and coats. Plus, he genuinely was horrified of the dark and so did take solace in being able to feel all sides of the darkness he was trapped in, because at least then he could be certain that there was no one else in there with him. So, he started to hide there when things got scary, and nobody bothered him because they all thought that he was preemptively shoving themselves in there as a punishment. In fact, he became so prone to pushing himself into small places when he was scared that he ended up with spinal issues that went untreated.
Even when his family dragged him to these parties and gatherings with other high class individuals to socialise and clamber their way up the social ladder, he was always more likely to sneak off to the library (because there was always a library in houses like these) than actually talk to people. Libraries were so clogged up - not just physically, but all of the knowledge existing in one space was its own pressure if he thought about it long enough, and he liked to think about it, honestly. The library was where he found a ginger young man, with so many freckles and the brightest blue eyes ever, one who seemed distinctly uncomfortable but also curious about his presence, trying to start a highly stilted conversation about the book he had been reading. It was weird.
It was endearing. So, Hester humoured him, and it was the beginning of a strange but impossibly close friendship with one Peter Lukas. He would always find him at the strangest of moments, when he thought he was entirely alone in a room or even outside, and they would talk and laugh and bond over books and knowledge and the pressures of their families. The Lukases, from what Hester could tell, were weird. Like, weird weird. Isolating themselves unless absolutely necessary, barely even their own family members in those impossibly large and empty halls, and always distinctly...cold. Peter never really liked it that much, and so Hester tried to make it better for him by actively seeking him out at those weird parties that the Lukases never really wanted to hold or attend.
Simon Fairchild was a strange addition to their duo, appearing one seemingly normal day when Hester and Peter were making a game of trying to find someone else within those huge, endless halls of the Lukas home. He was a little bit older than them, although he talked like he was from a different century, if anyone asked Hester. He felt...a little uncomfortable around him, sometimes, a little bit like that comforting claustrophobia was brushed away just by being around him, but he was also nice and friendly, and seemed to enjoy the game of getting Peter away from the isolation - something about his 'patron' would enjoy stealing a Lukas? Whatever that meant.
Plus, he seemed to be uncomfortable with Hester as well, even if he hid it better, so it was a tit for tat thing. Either way, Simon fit in quite well with the duo, and it was easier to sneak around when they had someone who seemed to just know how to navigate these vast spaces with ease. As they grew older, into their early twenties, Peter became more...desperate to not be alone, which led to far too many situations like Simon clambering up a ladder to get into Peter's locked room while Hester tried to muffle his laughter into his sleeve while holding the ladder steady. It was confusing. It was fun. The dark, cramped spaces still called for him, and he still answered, because the claustrophobia was comforting.
It all came to a head after Simon had gone home early on one of their stupid adventures into the forest surrounding the Lukas estate, pleasantly cursing Hester out for catching him by surprise and shoving him into the stream that ran through the woodlands. A fog had rolled over the space, and Peter had tensed up all of a sudden, grabbing him by the arm as though he would lose him if he didn't keep him close. Then a woman stepped out of the fog, and it took Hester a moment to register that she looked familiar because she looked like Peter, ginger with freckles and...no, her eyes were grey. Not the brightest blue like Peter's.
What they spoke about, Hester truly did not understand - talking about The Lonely like it was something more than just a feeling, about disgracing the family and about being in danger because of it. It didn't make sense, but then she was reaching out and there was the crack of a broken bone and Peter was- Peter was on the floor, neck at an unnatural angle, and those brightest blue eyes were now dull. Hester was screaming. The woman turned her attention to him, impossibly irritated as she blamed him for Peter 'straying', the fog starting to close in on all sides - not offering that comforting claustrophobia but a terrifying one, one that had him raising his arms up as though to protect himself before the floor...well, it was like the dirt shifted around him, and they were. In the ground.
*Cracks knuckles* So, Hester Ainsley. Buried Avatar, Head Librarian of the Magnus Institute. I'm going to do this in two parts, with this post being dedicated to them as an individual and then the other dedicated to his backstory. Feel free to send me questions, because there are some things I could have gone more detail into but got overwhelmed over! I also have a statement for Hester...if anyone's interested in that?

if Hester were to be just chilling and eating from a patch of dirt and another person came along and ALSO started eating from that patch of dirt (w/o getting in Hester's way), would Hester fuck with their fellow dirt muncher?
Hmmm...it depends entirely what kind of dirt muncher it was. If it's a fellow Buried avatar? Comfortable silence between them, they're both chilling and Hester isn't going to even react to them. If it's Literally Anyone Else? Entirely depends on WHY she's outside eating dirt. If it's just to get away from the institute for a while before he's dragged back? She'll ignore the fuck out of them and will make it clear that he's uncomfortable with their presence, but that's as far as it goes. Will engage in conversation but will be a dick until given reason to behave otherwise. If they're infuriated and stomped out of the institute to get away from one Elias Bouchard? Run. RUN!!! They will not accept this!!
here is my artfight profile! i decided to participate for the first time spur of the moment, so i dont have any characters done yet but im workin on em!
