"Save me a hug, okay?"
"Okay. I'll stay up all night until you get back. Don't take too long because I'm tired."
"I'll drive fast. I love you, baby girl."
Those words were what Dean and his four-year-old daughter said to each other the last time he called her. The call was placed six hours ago while he and Sam packed to leave a very bad few days behind them. When her voice answered his, he nearly started crying, but he held all that back, repressed all of his bad feelings, because she didn't need to hear them. When he gets back to the bunker, though he wants to see his little girl more than anything, he stays in the car long enough to clean off blood and dirt so she won't worry about his physical well-being. Then he allows himself to be heard as he enters the foyer. Moments later, the toddler is running at him and all but leaps into his arms. Picking her up, Dean kisses her cheek.
“I saved you a hug, Daddy,” she announces. “Do you want it?”
“Of course I do.”
Eagerly, the four-year-old throws her arms around his head and neck and squeezes so tight that a squeak escapes her. She holds on for several seconds, and Dean doesn't say a word about how she's blocking his mouth and nose.
When she's done, she asks, “Was that a good hug?”
“It was a very good hug.”
“I saved it all day.”
“I can tell. Got one for your uncle?”
Nodding, the toddler administers the same treatment to Sam. He sets her on her feet, and she takes Dean's hand and pulls him towards her bedroom. “You gotta tuck me in now.”
Dean follows her and watches fondly as she climbs in to bed. Sitting beside her, he tucks the covers around her shoulders, fluffs her pillow, and finds himself stroking her cheek. She gazes up at him, fatigue hidden just beneath her skin, and Dean feels every ounce of stress and disappointment come flooding back to pool behind his eyes. He swallows, and his throat catches.
“Daddy, are you sad?” inquires the four-year-old.
“I'm a little upset,” Dean admits. “Just had a couple of bad days.”
“Because of monsters?”
“Not exactly.”
“Why were they bad?”
Dean hesitates. His daughter shouldn't hear about this. Despite her genuine concern, she shouldn't know how badly he screwed up on this hunt. The well-meaning but disastrous act he committed is his problem and his alone. Sam and Castiel are around if he needs to vent and beat himself up about it. Only four years old, this girl is so innocent and unburdened and undeserving to share the weight on her father's shoulders.
“I did something I thought would be helpful, but it turned out to be a bad thing, and more bad things happened because I did it.” There. He won't say anything else.
“What was the bad thing?”
“Baby girl, please stop asking questions. I don't want to talk about it.”
When she purses her lips, Dean thinks he's made her feel bad and prepares to explain himself. She speaks before he can.
“You did a bad thing for a good reason,” she states matter-of-factly. “That's okay.”
Dean smiles just a little. “Thank you. I think I needed to hear that. Do you know you're a good kid?”
“I do my best.”
Chuckling, Dean kisses her forehead.
“Do you want to sleep in here?” offers the toddler.
“I think I do. Will I get snuggles?”
“Yes. Lots.”
Taking off his jacket, Dean gets under the covers beside his daughter. She cedes the pillow to him and curls into his chest; her body is comfortingly warm.
“Save me a hug for the morning, okay?” Dean requests. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” replies the toddler, “even when you do bad things.”
