when the kids start learning to walk they tend to splay their opposable thumbs out for balance, which is not good for their growing bones. so they get shoved into compression socks, which they universally hate.

the bonus feature is this also keeps them from going fully arboreal until they have the coordination to peel the socks off on their own.
