I am proud to say that I attended a public high school. Although the name of the high school sounds private, it’s not. This is the high school that supported my musical dreams. My band teacher, Mr. Kessler is one of the reasons my passion for jazz education runs so deep. Mr. Kessler invited me back to Bacon Academy today to guest conduct his jazz band, the same band I was in a little while ago (ha!). The experience was truly inspiring and exciting. They played the Artie Shaw transcription of his clarinet concerto and NAILED the style. I had to hold back tears of joy!! Not only did I get to conduct but I was able to nerd out with them about some of my early jazz history the I am conducting for my dissertation. This opportunity came at incredibly important time for me as I have been prepping and shedding (in the band room!) for the premier performance of the Sisters in Jazz Quintet at @jazzednet next week. I can’t wait to be surrounded by musicians on the top of their game and become more deeply informed about our music together. As I prepare for my final semester in my doctoral degree at @untcollegeofmusic I am reminded of my roots and why I am involved in this important music. I am thankful for all of the support that I have had over the years that has encouraged my determined path. I hope to be equally as encouraging to my students as I know how much of an impact an inspiring teacher can have. So, here’s to a new year! I hope to continue to encourage, energize and inspire with everything I’ve got in 2019!!
