    Her nursemaid was a bitter old woman who made a fuss out of     everything. She didn’t even realise who the boy in front of her was,     but she was going to make him know.  Yeon Hwa herself wrinkled her     nose. She didn’t particularly care if the boy bowed or not. She was wanted     to hurry and see her father.

  “ Bomo. It doesn’t matter. Let’s go.”

  Heartache gripped tight at the heart of the woman as dark eyes met with the images mounted on the wall before her. Images depicting a time so many years prior- images of a king, remembered not as a bloody monarch, but as a wise and just ruler. 

  Gwangjong. 

  For so long had visions of him clouded her mind- flashes of what seemed like memories. She’d attempted time and time again to brush them aside as nothing but dreams, but seeing his face now, she knew they were not. He was real. Wang So. 

  Her Wang So. 

   “I’m sorry...” She choked out, hand moving up to cover her mouth as tears began to overflow from sorrowful hues. “I’m sorry for leaving you alone.” 

  Memories flitted swiftly through her mind as she looked upon the parchment, sporting his familiar visage, bringing a wave of grief so powerful, she sank to her knees before the exhibit, clutching her heart. 

   “Sorry...” She repeated again through a strangled sob, shaking her head as though to shake the pain away. If only she could return to him- If only..

-- She wasn’t expecting his name to come from her servant’s     mouth. She’s  entertaining Jung when it happens, watching him practice     his calligraphy. He holds the pen awkwardly, and his strokes     are messy, but it still makes her happy to see him     write.

    A servant girl clears her throat and fidgets nervously.     Yoo wrinkles her nose at the interruption, but goes to     see what she needs nonetheless. She places a gentle hand     on Jung’s shoulder, assuring him that she’ll be be back before     following the girl to a different room.

   “ What is it? “    “ Your Highness, the Fourth Prince would look an audience with you. “

     She pauses, a bit shocked to hear his name or that he wanted      to see her. Something stirs in her, and she wasn’t quite sure      if it was rage or guilt. Shortly after Jung was born, her mistakes began      to eat at her. He looked so much like his brother, it only served as      a reminder of the son she cast away. She attempted to petition Taejo      to bring him back, but it fell on deaf ears.

     Perhaps now she would get the chance to try and correct things.

   “ Bring him in. “

THE   STRENGTH   OF his devotion to her always seemed to shake her to her core. it wasn’t something she was used to. there were memories that had begun to fade of people that she’d known, that she’d been devoted to but they’d not been as devoted to her. a hand was placed gently on his cheek as she rose on her tip toes to give him a small peck on the lips. “ don’t   let   the   thirteenth   prince   hear   that.   he   might   think   you   don’t   care   about   him. ” she teased, lips turning up into a smile. he didn’t need to know about her bad heart, didn’t need to know that they probably didn’t have a lot of time together. he didn’t need to know. not right now. not when it would ruin what time they did have together. “ i’m   not   going   anywhere.   i   promise. ” a promise that she’d have to break.

   “I think it’s the other way around. I trusted you not to treat her wrong-” The younger sibling started, looking at his hyung, a look of disappointment and anger on his features. 

   “You can’t go against this, and you know it. It’s the words of the late King. You must uphold them.” For too long had Jung watched his brothers bicker and battle over the girl whom had held his affection for so long, and he would do so no longer. “Let me take her away. She wants it.”
