I’m doing my winter decks a bit late (see here summer and fall). During December, I was mostly working with decks that helped me close the energies from 2020. Of course I could already see some patterns, but it’s been the work from January what has made me write down the definitive 2020 winter deck list. Listed in alphabetical order, they are:

Tarot decks: 

Blood, Bread & Roses Tarot: Expressive collage deck with a modern and vintage vibe (at the same time). A jewel of diversity.

Cheimonette Tarot: Ethereal watercolours to dive deep into oneself, with the fantastic addition of 3 different World cards. A winter-into-spring pick!

Considerate Cat Tarot: Cozy, softly-coloured cat-themed deck highlighting those gentler moments in life that deserve our attention and gratitude.

Constellation Tarot: Inspired by the night sky, this glowing blue-bathed pip deck features reworked majors that depict constellations.

Frau Grand Duchess Tarot: This vintage collage (originally made on green index card) feels surprisingly timeless. Quirky and fun!

Light Visions Tarot: Expressive, swirly artwork in deep purple and light cream, with gorgeous framed majors and panoramic minors of unparalleled beauty. One of my all-time favs.

Mythologia Fennica Tarot: It introduces traditional Finnish world view elements and old tales. Thought provoking artwork - and wisdom!

Painted Tarot: Wonderful for dark evenings with its amazing colour play and a balance of movement and stillness, like a quiet song to hum along.

Sasuraibito Tarot: Modern, rich symbols appear in the beautiful artwork that brings coziness and comfort to any reading.

Watersprite Tarot: Mixing reality and dreams, this is a soothing and magical deck. The artwork is expressive, & suit symbols are not repeated.

Oracle decks: 

Aurora Tarot: Yes, this is an oracle - my quintessential winter deck. Dreamy Arctic landscapes and elements are charmingly brought to life by awe-inspiring artwork. It feels like magic!

Fox Universe Tarot: Though tarot-structured, it is also a wonderful oracle. Its beautiful geometric artwork (in shades of grey and white) conveys messages of radical self-love.

Happi Cards: Small, simple, and effective; great for pick-me-ups when a  loving mindset and positive thoughts may be needed.

Magic & Manifestation Cards: Enchanting and whimsical affirmation deck that weaves inspiration, guidance and working on manifestation.

Oracle of the Hidden Worlds: A door to other realms, with a cool palette yet an inherent warmth. Evocative artwork that connects to nature and beyond nature.

The Arcana Inktober Day 3

Alrighty!!! Here's Day 3 of #thearcanainktober2019 !!

This is Day 3 of 2019's: Your Favorite Arcana, which in my case is Scout because Scout is precious and Scout looks so much like my late pup Frodo, just with longer ears.

And then the second one is Day 3 of 2018's: The Magician (As a Character), which I chose Asra's Dad, Salim. Idk I feel like we didn't get to see Asra's parents as much so why not have the Magician look like Salim?

We’re four weeks into lockdown and it’s taking a toll on me. Even though I work out and get fresh air and sun from the rooftop terrace, I don’t sleep well. We’ve got two more weeks to go, so I keep myself busy. A few weeks ago I mentioned that my current favourite deck combination is the Fox Tarot and the Fox Universe Tarot (A Self Care Oracle), both created by Taylor Haigh at Fox on an Island. It is the latter in which I will be diving deep today!

Let’s start with an intro: these 80 cards (24 majors) draw on a decade of Taylor’s experience in social work. It is a written-illustrated guide to practicing self care in a stressful world. It is intended to learn to recognize signs of burnout and add some essential tools to your personal development toolbox. Just like its sibling, the artwork is done in different shades of grey and white. It is clean, and there’s a geometric vibe going on with focus on patterns and a very smooth linework. However, it is more complex and detailed than the art in The Fox Tarot.

Taylor says: “I wanted the illustrations to be an ode to life; you may find yourself in a place where you think you don’t want to be alive anymore because it’s really hard to see the beauty in the world and I wanted the artwork to be your reminder”. And it’s just like that - the pictures don’t even begin to do it justice. The contrast does not only lie on its artwork: the beautiful, pleasing images are just the start to powerful messages of radical self-love, exploring both the smooth and the challenging aspects  (and everything in between) of life and personal relationships. It is balanced, but why also radical? We tend to think of self-care as a nice bath and a warm cup of tea. However, Taylor adds: “for some, practicing self care may be complicated by myriad barriers [...] For everyone fighting to practice self care despite adversity I see you too”.

The four suits are Wheels (Personal Development), Spoons (Energy), Candles (Burnout), and Diamonds (Recovery). The Court cards are named Student, Ghost, Witch, and Wizard. The 24 Major Arcana guides are also renamed and have new meanings. It is similar to an oracle deck in that it provides the user with 80 words to reflect on. All of these details and the meanings of every card are explained in the 96 page guidebook, which also features information on how to work with the deck and spreads. Everything is topped by a fantastic production quality, including gold edges and a sturdy two-piece box.

The Fox Universe Tarot (a Self Care Oracle) won my heart the first moment I worked with it. A brief flip through is enough to see how much beauty there is to uncover in these cards, and they truly shine when they are doing their powerful job. The deck has a unique personality - but each card does so, too, telling a different story for every person that may reflect in them. It is a well-rounded deck, and there’s no other like it.
