It is really the general term, some people mistakenly say “Karate” for all. It is similar to how people say “Coke” for all soda.
I know, but as an occasional martial artist myself, I'd say "I have a green belt in judo", not "a green belt in martial arts". (Although I should mention this wasn't a direct Harbach quote, but a bit of narrative from an article.) Saying "I practice martial arts" seems fine to me though.
I also read a German interview that literally started off asking Harbach about his biceps. No "so how does it feel to have a bestseller?" or "why baseball?" Right in there with "seriously, how do you have such impressive upper arms?" (Answer: football and martial arts.)
