Bonus post for the 172nd anniversary of the birth of Spiritualism: a fragment of the infamous Fox Cottage itself, where Modern American Spiritualism was born on March 31, 1848. Within the walls of the Hydesville, NY home, young sisters Kate and Maggie were believed to have broken the veil of communication between the worlds of the living and the dead. The shadowbox includes piece of primitive rebar once part of the home, a commemorative coin from 1915, minted for the National Spiritualists Association’s annual convocation, and a vintage postcard showing the cottage before it burned in Lily Dale in the 1950s, where the cottage had been relocated. Displaying my fragment in this way was inspired by a local Spiritualist’s similar display (swipe to see!) of a piece of the home her grandfather had personally collected.
