Caught, Maul gives him a narrow look, then grimaces. “The Nightsisters are a great threat,” he says. “Their attempt to control me, and Savage and Feral as well, cannot be borne—”

“Yeah,” Fox says, unimpressed. “But that’s not why you want to go back to Dathomir right now.”

Maul doesn’t answer, but in his mind there's an image. A faceless Nightsister, dressed in red, handing a baby off to a cloaked and hooded figure, desperate in her hope for something different. He’s thinking of this unknown mother who tried to save him, her efforts flawed and twisted but—

She looked for him, afterwards. She looked for him, wanted to save him, and Maul is thinking of long, dark years when he had nothing but Sidious's cruelty, and what it would have meant to have someone find him, pull him from Sidious's clutches, and take him away, just because of their love for him.

It makes Padmé’s throat tight just feeling the echoes, and Maul's tangle of emotions and fears and hopes is enough to make the decision about what to say a simple one.

“It’s all right,” Padmé murmurs, and she kisses him again too, soft and light and lingering. Pulls back, and says, “Maul. Whatever you want to do, we’ll be with you.”
