Birmingham’s FoxMind makes tracks that breath. Where there’s a (most of the time welcome) running trend at the moment of constantly one-upping the previous bar, melodically or structurally trying to provoke some kind of blind-sided reaction from the crowd whether it be through ingenuity or just excited confusion, other producers - like FoxMind and the artists who call his Circular Jaw label home - lay out a framework from the start and concentrate on subtly shifting expectations, expanding or twisting the framework whilst maintaining its integrity throughout.
Action Plan, forthcoming on a split EP with fellow gritty technician Nuvaman, manages to develop organically over the course of its runtime whilst being composed of the most resolutely inorganic elements. The percussion is rigid but the way it’s overlaid onto the bass is free flowing, as if the track’s construction was born out of a research session into building resonance; concrete skyscrapers responding to the low frequency waves of an earthquake by swaying gently as if caught in a breeze.
