Portland five piece Foxy Lemon describe their music as boogie blues, and their new song Butter certainly has plenty of gritty raw energy. The music video for their song is an action packed adventure, too. For those of you that like your rock soulful and sooty, raucous and wild, Foxy Lemon’s The White Stripes, Yukon Blonde, and The Black Keys evoking psych tinged rock is the perfect treat. Butter comes from Joint, the band’s split EP with Cambrian Explosion.
These guys opened for My Goodness at The Hawthorne Theatre and found at least one more fan.

Portland's Foxy Lemon and Cambrian Explosion are dropping a new split EP produced by Cambrian Explosion's Nori Lockhart called Split EP. Vinyl production is booming, but expensive. That said, sharing production and pressing costs might be something we see more of 2015 and I love a well-paired split.
Side A
The Foxy Lemon side is pretty straightforward blues based rock, often looking like an uptight White Stripes session. Solid performances, but it lacks the laid back ease that make a groove really pop ... that is, until we reach the end of side A. "Leave Me Cold", breaks the 6-minute mark without breaking a sweat, the band let's off the gas pedal and breathes (perhaps for the first time). It's a good direction and I hope Foxy Lemon continues to explore it.

Side B
Cambrian Explosion's half of the split picks up where they left off with their self-recorded debut, which is with a collection of huge psych anthems that you'll want to put on repeat. "Mirage and Daydream", at 5:44 it's the shortest of the three songs on this side of the split, is a bombastic jam and the lead single off this collection. They open things up with the sprawling psych of "Zoetrope" and take their time (7 minutes and 16 seconds) exploring a couple of solid themes, before closing out the record with the driving dynamic opus "Desert Rain".
All in all, it's a solid split record. Nori's production is spacious and clean, but not too pristine. It is a record that is obviously full of life, love, care, and some great music from two groups to keep an eye out for in the new year.

FOXY LEMON - "SUN & SHADOW" [MUSIC]
[Recommended for fans of the White Stripes, Led Zeppelin, or the Black Keys.]
Foxy Lemon is a rock act from Portland, OR that will transport you back into the 70's. Let me be the first to say that “rock” is an incredibly vague term, and I feel weird even writing it, but the truth is, the music Foxy Lemon makes is really the truest form of the word. I guess I could tack on “& roll” to it... or I could call it “blues”... whatever; genres are for suckers anyway. The tune below is called “Sun & Shadow” – enjoy!
GB! DEC2013 Mixtape by Foxy Lemon
The immediate influence that springs to mind for me is Led Zeppelin. From the intricate, acoustic intro to the wispy vocals and through to the frenetic, evolving drums, everything about “Sun & Shadow” harkens back to a simpler time. This track has absolutely no trouble progressing from a soothing placidity to a more aggressive, driving mood, and thanks to those smooth transitions, it's an incredibly fluid song.
