Fradams(Ben Franklin x John Adams)
TEMPLATE IS NOT MINE! TEMPLATE CREATOR’S NAME IS AT THE BOTTOM!
Ok but why do I feel like they woke up cuddling each other.
Edit: I wondered how they reacted when they found out they had to sleep together…
(then again, it’s the 18th century and they most likely slept in a place with standards lower than they were, but still)
I don't know what to title this yet so we'll just call it the Dad AU for now. This would be the prologue essentially in which Ben actually wants children because...well because I can. Also because he would probably make a good father tbh. I am once again blaming @dolley-madison for this because she puts ideas in my head. Enjoy! /// When Ben had first mentioned children, John had nodded and continued pouring his morning coffee. There was still another year before either of them were graduating and John assumed it was musing about a possible future. He tried not to think about the possibility that he wouldn't be in that version of Ben's future. They lived in a tiny one bedroom apartment, and some weeks they were so busy they only saw each other climbing into bed at night. There was school to worry about and Ben's job at that he computer repair shop and John's tutoring between shifts at the cafe down the street. And then there were debts and the responsibility of looking after another human being when John could barely look after himself and Ben lived off pop tarts. "I mean it. I think we'd make good parents." Ben had wrapped his arms around John's waist and John hummed in the non-commital way that indicated he hadn't had enough caffeine yet that morning for real conversation. "Let's try a plant first." "We already have plants. They're doing just fine." "Abby has our spare key. I think she waters them when we aren't home. Or maybe she just replaces them." "Alright, alright I get it." Ben pulled away slowly and John sighed. "A dog. Or a cat. Abby has a cat. If she'll let us take care of her cat for a month and we do well, we can get our own pet and go from there." "Deal." Ben grinned and John assumed that by his third cup of coffee, his boyfriend would have forgotten all about it. He didn't. John didn't know how he convinced Abby to go on a month long vacation but by the end of it John loved the tiny monster and was loathe to give her back. When Ben didn't needle him about getting their own pet, John assumed he'd decided it was too much responsibility. Instead a tiny mutt showed up in the living room on John's birthday. The little guy had scrambled eagerly into John's lap with ears that curled like horns and an arrow shaped marking on his tail. He'd jokingly named it Satan and the name had stuck and John figured that was alright because everyone in their building was over 18 and under 30. Calling the dog the devil couldn't be that bad when there weren't small children around and dissaproving middle aged adults. And then they'd graduated and to John's great suprise, Ben took him out for dinner and then through the park that summer and proposed right there in the starlight. He had hung around and while they fought regularly, as was to be expected with a couple involving John Adams, Ben still climbed into his bed every night anyways. It wasn't until Satan carried a pair of rings down the aisle that it hit John like a freight train. He wanted kids. Ben wanted kids. He wanted kids with Ben. They were married now and had actual jobs paying more than minimum wage. They were looking for a real house and out of school. The debt still hung around but it was manageable. The idea wasn't far fetched anymore. It was a future John could have with Ben. And so he waited a few more months, subtly set his heart on a house he didn't like but had an okay backyard, was in a cul de sac and within a good school district and most importantly had three bedrooms. Ben seemed puzzled but didn't object when he found out the house was within their price range. There was a reason for that. Which turned out to be that the house needed a lot of work. John fixed the backyard while Ben worked on the house and when he finished he tried to help inside. For the most part he was useless and used the time when Ben was working to look into adoption. It took another year and a few hospital trips to complete renovations but their anniversary came and went and John thought back to their early morning conversation three years ago when all was said and done. He gripped the papers in his hand tightly and sighed before walking into their home. They'd turned the house into a home. He marveled at that every time he walked in. "Hey sweetheart. How was your day?" Ben's voice traveled from the kitchen to the entry way and John followed it, finding Ben at the island surrounded by a disassembled toaster. It was a testament to how often it happened that John hardly narrowed his eyes at the mess. "Good. Yours?" "Eh." Ben shrugged, elbow deep in the microwave and John opened his mouth to ask why both appliances were dismantled before deciding against it. He either wouldn't understand or the answer wouldn't be worth it. "So." John slid the paper across the counter to Ben, suddenly nervous and Ben didn't look up. "So what?" "The papers Ben." "Uh huh." Ben swore and pulled his hand away before the microwave sparked. "I assume you mean what's-oh." His eyes scanned them quickly and John slapped his grease covered hands away before he could pick up the documents. "Wash your hands." "Are those-" "Adoption papers." John prodded at him until Ben moved to the sink. "Nothing official but we've been approved and they found a kid they think would be a good match for us. He's in a foster home right now but is ready to be adopted pending we pass the other steps." "You-" "I wanted to suprise you." Ben's grin was exuberant and John found himself smiling in response. He pulled John into a tight hug and lifted him off the ground and John smacked his shoulder. "That's...thank you. This is amazing." Ben kissed him quickly before looking back yo the papers and then hopefully at John. "Do we know anyhting about him?" "His name is James. I met him this afternoon. He's in an overcrowded foster home right now, I was told he gets sick a lot but I think we can handle it. He's just a little over six months old." "You held him and fell in love didn't you?" Ben laughed as he blushed. "No. Alright a little. You're to meet him before we start any of the paperwork or go through the process. I want us both to be ready for this. There's a lot of steps to it Ben we could still be-" "I know." Ben quieted him with a kiss. "Can I meet him now?" "Ben..." "Please." His expression was bright and hopeful and John sighed and pulled out his phone. "I'll call. But calm down, we might have to wait. It's getting pretty late." Ben bounced up and down on the balls of his feet as John made the call and when John sighed loudly as he hung up the phone Ben caught his eye. His smile and widened slowly and John nodded. "She said we can come by right now if you want." "Yes!" "Go put on nicer clothes. Honestly Benjamin. And get the grease out of your hair. Then we'll go. I'm not having you make a bad impression." John shook his head as Ben kissed his cheek and slipped off to the bedroom. Thirty minutes later and they had left, arriving at the foster home in another thirty. Nancy, she had insisted John call her Nancy when they first met, welcomed them in with a baby in her arms. "John! Good to see you again. I'm glad you could come again so soon." There was a knowing smile on her face and as they came inside she offered the baby to John who immediatley softened. "Nancy, this is my husband, Benjamin. Benjamin, this is Nancy and this..." He let Ben come closer for a better look at the infant. "This is James." James was asleep, wisps of dark hair on his head and a fist stuck in his mouth and Ben cooed softly. "Can I hold him?" John nodded and they transfered James with a minimum amount of fumbling. John fussily rearranged Ben's hold on James until he was satisfied and Nancy giggled in the background. "I suppose you two will be beginning the adoption process then?" "Yes." Ben answered quickly and John snorted a laugh. "Yes we will."
Crisis
John Adams is always in the middle of some sort of crisis. This time the crisis is his. Ben's there to sort it out for him just like always. A self indulgent fradams fic because I like forcing my insecurities and the insecurities of people close to me on characters to figure out how to deal with them. /// John sighed softly, nuzzling his nose into the neck of his bedmate and let a smile twitch at his lips as he took in the smell. Metallic, a salty sweat, homely musk and the mango shampoo that had been cheapest at the store that week for the founding fathers to share. It was a smell he knew well, a smell that was immediately calming when he couldn't find his center because the owner himself would be calm. He could trust that. It was a smell that meant safety and reason and trust. Because he could trust Benjamin. They had been at odds many times certianly but at the end of the day Benjamin was comforting and reasonable and John could trust him. He never did anything without a reason and when they argued, if John took a minute, he could see why Ben saw things the way he did. Sometimes he couldn't do that with others. Ben was...easy. The arm around his waist tightened and John ghosted his lips over the skin of Benjamin's neck and waited for him to still. He was ready to move. Ready to get up and start the day but Ben would pout if he woke up without John there. A few more minutes then. Just for Ben. Abigail had never been able to keep him in bed. But that was only because Abigail didn't mind. Abigail liked to be kept just as busy as he did when it came down to it. Ben slowed him down, Ben liked to be a little bit slower so he could see everything, take in everything from every angle. John often tended to move past things so quickly he missed the smaller stuff. And Abigail had understood that. She knew she couldn't slow him down and make him rest because she didn't either. But Ben always had been able to and she encouraged him to and John could never thank her enough for that. It had been her corresponding with Ben through her letters to John that had forced him into action. The one thing he had hesitated on, and Abigail hadn't allowed him to. She knew, she always knew. Perhaps that was why he loved her, she knew him too well. Benjamin knew him just as well as Abigail did. Just in different ways. "You can go." Ben murmured softly, planting a kiss on John's hair and John let out a rumble in his chest, rolling slightly more onto Ben's chest and Ben chuckled. "It's alright." "I know." John closed his eyes and searched himself for any need to pace the room and keep moving. It was building, but slowly. He could put it off a bit longer before getting up and making breakfast to keep his hands busy. Ben rubbed his back gently and John closed his eyes, letting his mind wander. They had shared mornings like this back when John was first trying to get Congress to vote on independence. They had shared mornings like this in France. Mornings with Abigail weren't the same but they had always made John feel the same. Moving around each other in unison and doing things separately but with each other nearby by. It left the feeling of being comforted and appreciated and...loved. he wasn't prepared yet to discuss the last feeling with Ben. He missed Abigail. Madison was constantly thinking about Dolley, most of his coherent sentences centered on Dolley. If he didn't have Ben, perhaps he might have been the same. Madison had never been especially close to any of them except Jefferson and even then Jefferson was often off in his own world and paying attention to other things. But Ben was there. Ben gave him the attention he needed when he needed it. And he did. They all did in some way because it was hard enough adjusting to the future and it would have been even harder without some sort of comfort from the past. Perhaps that was why they'd each held onto their customs and clothes and wigs as hard as they did. "John, John?" He snapped back to the present, suddenly realizing that his face was wet and so was Ben's chest. He sat up quickly, turning away and Ben caught his arm. There wasn't a grip, just a hand there. Sitting on his forearm and the tears ran faster. John didn't pull away, and Ben put an arm around his waist, encouraging John to lean against him. He did, focusing on his breathing for a moment until he calmed. He wiped the tears away and stood. "I'm going to go make breakfast." Ben didn't stop him, just watched from the bed with a sigh and let him leave. Breakfast went fast, for John at least. By the time the others were up, everything was ready and he left early for work. On the way back he stopped for groceries and liquor, making sure the trip took him as much time as possible. He was starting to flag, he knew what that felt like but he had never stopped for exhaustion until his body forced him to and working out the energy meant sleep and sleep meant he didn't have to think for a few hours. Thinking only led to Ben, and Ben led to Abigail and Abigail led to homesickness. It wasn't something he wanted to deal with right now. Benjamin let him be when he returned, making an excuse about wanting to work on speeches for the presidential campaign Hamilton was bound and determined to launch. He wasn't suprised to wake up at six am to Ben lifting him from the kitchen table and carrying him to bed as he'd done many nights before. He couldn't remember when he'd fallen asleep. The morning would be just like the last and that woke John up a bit. He rolled over in the bed, away from Ben and stared at the alarm clock until his vision came into focus. "Talk to me." Ben's voice was soft, thick with sleep. He'd likely taken a nap while waiting for John to drop. "I miss home. I miss working together at Congress. I miss writing Abigail. I miss you sneaking into bed in the middle of the night in France from 'late night diplomacy' only to find me still awake, working. I miss knowing I was helping shape a nation. That I was shaping the world." "You miss knowing that you would leave something behind when you died." Ben sighed softly. "We did John. We all left something behind." "But will we in this new age? And is what I left behind what I wanted as a legacy? You know as well as I that you and Washington and Hamilton have much fame, even Jefferson is better recognized than Madison and I. And Madison...well whether he is aware of it or not is a different matter." "Is it more important the image you left behind or the things you left behind? My image is less than stellar though it is truthful. But what I left behind in terms of my inventions, the declaration we fought for in Congress...I am proud of that. Aren't you?" "I am. But could I have done more?" "You always want more John. You aren't satisfied with what you have, that's fine. It's good. But you can't change what you left as a legacy then in the here and now, only what you leave here when we are returned to our time." Ben tucked John's head beneath his chin. "There's something else bothering you isn't there?" "How do you know me so well?" "How many nights have we shared together John? Whether through work or comfort or pleasure?" "No. I mean that's what's bothering me. You know me so well. As well as Abigail ever did. I can't begin to understand it. I will never understand you." John closed his eyes for a moment and waited. "I hardly understand myself John. But what I do understand is that I want what is best for you. And to have that I must know you. I know you because I want to. I am sorry if reminding you of Abigail only brings you heartache." "It does not. Well not exactly. I want to make a difference here. I'm ready to. I'm so focused on it sometimes I forget about her. But then you remind me and I wonder if forgetting her is the most horrible thing I could to her know that we're...apart." "I think she would be pleased to know you've found another cause to focus yourself on. You always have been a bit absorbed in the task at hand." Ben chuckled. "She'd be annoyed that you haven't kept track of all the gossip she'd like to hear." "I'll relay it to her when...if...we return home." "When. We will. You can still make your mark on this future age before we go, don't doubt that." "How can you provide what I need while asking nothing in return?" Ben forced him to roll over now, pulling John into a tight embrace. "Perhaps you haven't noticed but anything I need that I don't get from you, are usually things I need to do myself. You give me what you bring to whatever it is we are and it is what I need. That's why it works. Whatever it is I'm giving you, I know not what it is but I am glad to be able to give it." "What do I provide for you?" "A force to make me take action. A friend. An annoyance at times but in a good way. Release." There was a laugh at the end of that and John glared which only made Ben grin. The glare fell and he relaxed, yawning and letting himself push the problem away, satisfied with the answers and solutions for the moment. "Thank you." "You're welcome." John closed his eyes, nuzzled back into the mix of sweat and metal and musk and mango and fell asleep to a kiss pressed to his forehead.
