if brat why so lovable
finished of the Devil's Episode 0 tonight and. wow. WOW. Nth Circle has created something really special here.
they drew me in with the Hot (Possibly A Little Unhinged? ( ;) ) Redhead Protagonist i'd seen people posting about recently on social media and they HOOKED me with the visuals, music, sound design, the PURE VIBES on display. neo noir is not a style I'd have pegged as a Go-To for me but goddamn if it didn't HIT right out the gate. even the somewhat frontloaded (and admittedly mostly optional) expositional bits managed to hold my attention enough to not make my ADHD-ass brain glaze over and require too much re-reading!
from the first exploration zone the game's sense of humor IMMEDIATELY resonated with me, the music cuts in and out at just the right moments, even if it's for the briefest of gags ("Fidget-Tubbies."), the sound and visual impacts fuse together to make a HELL of a fun, impactful, punchy experience, the gameplay is tense yet forgiving enough (assuming you did your due diligence) to get you a feel for what the road's gonna be like before they presumably yank off the training wheels for later chapters.
the takedown sequence at the climax of the case was SO satisfying and really fun to punch up with my fiancée and I voice acting it on stream, and getting it turned right back around in us in the cards segment in the epilogue was a very fun touch as well to give us that ever-so-delightful little Boss Teaser that seems so out of place for this genre yet works *so well*.
Not to mention The Twist. Built up well enough that I wasn't entirely surprised, but a slight system shock to be confirmed nonetheless. An extremely bold move, and one that I'm fascinated to see where the devs take it.
also Fran is a gem who must be protected.
Bet your ass I've already bought Episode 1 and WILL be playing it on the next Variety Stream.
Gang. Try of the Devil. Episode 0 is free and so, so worth your time and attention.
