"Crater + Corvus" by Francesca Buchko

Corvus and Crater, the crow and the cup, are two aspects of an old Greek myth involving the god Apollo. One day, Apollo tasked his crow messenger to fill a cup with water from a well. On his way the crow passed a fig tree with ripening fruit and was tempted to stop and wait for the fruit to ripen. As he sat, he realized Apollo would be upset by his delayed return, so he prepared a lie that he hoped would explain his delay. When the crow reappeared, he carried a snake in his talons and told Apollo that Hydra had prevented him from reaching the well. The snake was certainly not Hydra, and Apollo was no fool. Furious that he had been lied to, Apollo threw the cup and crow into the sky.

Upright, Corvus and Crater symbolize procrastination, laziness, and delay. This may manifest itself in arriving to dinner late with a flimsy excuse, blowing off work responsibilities, or one’s failure to plan efficiently. This card is about missed deadlines, dismantled schedules, and the penalties that come with not following through.

Reversed, this card may indicate that procrastination is a more serious issue. It may symbolize repeat offenses or a chronic inability to stay on task. This is a card of frequent excuses made to friends, family, and even one’s self. More might be at stake than a slap on the wrist.
