OCtober Day 14: Instagram
Francis lay in her bed, wearing a Stitch-Kigurumi and holding her Totoro plushie tight to her chest. Her smartphone lay beside her head, a fact that would surprise many of her fellow students, who may as well think, Francis was born with the phone in her hand and also will die this way. Like some kind of digital native, millennial cyborg.
“You have to show me everything!” Francis remembered Juë’s enthusiastic voice, “I’ll be like constantly on your Insta, Izzy!” Yeah… Great. How should Francis document her time in a school for criminals? “Look here, this is where we plan out heists #conartists #criminalmastermind #don'ttellthecops” Yeah, right. That would be the easiest way to get sent back… Well, maybe she should do stupid stuff like that after all… But not now. Not before she had shown Timo Hardenberg her awesome tech-skills. This was the only cool thing to do in this prison-slash-school.
Francis rolled to the side and picked up the phone. Listlessly she made a selfie but deleted it immediately as Francis saw the sulking, puffy faced gremlin looking at her. Selfies had never been her thing. Maybe she should take pictures of her basil on the windowsill. Or… yeah, maybe she could take pictures of the campus and put them through so many filters and effects that they could be everywhere. If she couldn’t do simple tricks like that, there was no use being here. Piece of cake for Francis McCloud.
With new enthusiasm, Francis jumped out of her bed. She took another selfie – nope, still ugly. Deleted – and went out of the room. Still wearing the kigurumi as a sign of “See all the fucks I give” and her face turned to the screen in her hand, she shuffled through the cold but sunlit corridors of the milestone of brutalist architecture. A masterwork in grey concrete. If she wanted people to pity her, this would be the perfect motive. As Francis stopped, she noticed, that she was biting her thumbnail. Where was she going anyways? She wanted to head for the canteen but this… seemed to be the wrong corridor? Shit, Francis knew, she would get lost. And she wouldn’t ask for directions. Okay, no picture of the canteen. It was shitty anyways. “Here look… some… food stuff (I think?) in a styrofoam container #foodporn #hautecuisine #Idon’tknowwhatthisis”
Next destination: Server room. Because if there was one location, she wanted to show her friend at home, it was the realm of the basement dwellers (It was also the only place in the whole school, she could find without getting lost). Also Juë thought, Francis would study “something with computers”, so showing her computer related stuff would affirm her alibi. Francis felt a bit sorry to lie to her best (not to say her only) friend, but telling the truth was… hm… no better option. One day, Francis promised herself, one day, when I’m rich and famous, I will tell her. Well, scratch “famous” – infamous. Until this day, she would just fake her way through. #mylifeoninstagram
