This is Francks François Deceus, constantly exploring & evolving… . Next year will be our 21st year working together… . Artwork (detail): MUMBO #1, acrylic & collage on paper, 18x15, 2019… . As a Haitian immigrant or “refugee”, as I was sometimes referred to while growing up in Brooklyn during the 1980s, it was difficult to maintain explicit social and cultural ties to more than one place at a time. This created a constant struggle with identity and acceptance. . This work is an attempt to dig deeper into the construct of my Identity, juxtaposed with an African American context, in the backdrop of a Black Lives Matter time frame. . Deceus has shown at the Brooklyn Museum, NY, Museum of Contemporary African Diaspora Arts (MoCADA), The National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis, TN and Hampton University, Hampton, VA amongst prestigious institutions… . About this work, he says "despite my Haitian Nationality I am often confronted and subjugated to harsh scrutiny, solely based on complexion. For those of you who know the works of or have collected #FrancksFrançoisDeceus, you already know the significance of this piece, Keeping Faith. Mixed media on wood, 48x48 and completed in 2004, this is a rare large-scale painting that has been available. Curator @TerrellTilford has been working alongside #FrancksDeceus since 1999, when he, #MelvinAMarshall of @ArtCultureNow and a small group curating under the banner #TheArtistsShowcaseSeries first showed his work in midtown-Manhattan. Subsequent shows followed in Oakland and downtown LA (#DTLA). TilfordArtGroup would eventually produce a multitude of shows with Françks.
