The Indiscreet Servant - François Bonvin - 1871
A moody black chalk portrait by French artist Francois Bonvin. He’s 30 years old here, on the tails of his first successful exhibition in 1844. An admirer of Dutch artists of the 1600s, Bonvin was perhaps inspired by the drama of Rembrandt’s self-portraits.
