During the April Fools episode you included a scene where Leo Quinn and Frank Williamson almost kissed. You then stated that this is very wrong and immoral which I fully agree with, however I am curious as to what led you to make this scene? Is a secret relationship between Leo and Frank a funny joke you like to put in sometimes? Or are there people out there who genuinely want a relationship between these two?
I just have to start by saying thank you for this message, it’s left me absolutely tickled. I’m also VERY interested in how listeners perceive this so I love hearing this kind of thing.
The answer is it’s a little bit of both! While I was writing S2, Asher (Frank’s VA) and I talked a lot about how their relationship this season hits a lot of the same beats as a love story. We developed a bit of an inside joke that people were going to ship them because of this (and because Frank is just one of those characters people love to ship - morally reprehensible, smarmy, occasionally has an emotion, etc)
So as part of this, there are a few moments in the script that I put there just to clarify “IT’S NOT ROMANTIC BY THE WAY!! JUST SO YOU KNOW!!”
However those lines did not go down so well with some people, and there are definitely a few Lank Shippers out there (I won’t name names but I’m looking at a particular couple of twin strangers 👀)
This section of the April Fool’s transcript in particular, just after the scene you’re talking about, hurt a few feelings 😅
I’ve talked about it a little online (and for those looking forward to our Patreon, there’s a lot of more in-depth discussion in some of the commentary eps we’ve recorded so far). One thing I’m trying to be clear about is that I don’t want to bait a relationship that was never intended to be endgame. BUT I have very purposefully written a love story with Leo and Frank this season, just not in the traditional romantic sense. So I support anyone who chooses to read that as romantic, it’s just not something I’m pursuing in the show and I don’t want anyone to be disappointed
(However I do think you’re right in that people who actively want Leo and Frank to develop a romantic relationship are few and far between)
