RIP Kafka, you would've loved Disco Elysium
Yo bro !
"It's terrifying how quickly you turn into a monster in the eyes of those who can no longer use you."
Fr, Franz Kafka
something from my notes which I had written during hs, quite the ponderer I was back then.
During the summer I had made the decision to read a certain book by FranzKafka, The metamorphosis. It was hard to grasp as a concept as it treated something so unnatural like a human becoming a giant bug but it also had every realistic element spot on. Ungrateful people, injustice, stepping on the poor and helpless when they no longer seemed useful or worthy…things as such are present and have been since mankind, although some oblivious to such conclusion.
Back to present day, i’m at my final year of high school and in literature hour. The topic is none other than the literary genius Franz Kafka and his most profound creation “The Metamorphosis”. Although it was a topic I was acquainted with as I had read it and pondered upon it, once the teacher started to explain in a compact matter the entirety and meaning of the book I found myself…questioned. What I thought I knew was right, what I read was the same as everybody, but I wasn’t. Reading the book I remember intense emotion overtaking me, fury for the wrongdoings but pity for the wronged. I was quick to feel sad for Gregors pitiful fate only to realise, he didn’t mind it? How can this be? Tossed aside in a dark damp room with only your thoughts to ponder on and no tongue to speak them…how possibly could you come to peace with this fact? The people who you thought cherished you now want you dead…why the hell are you so calm Gregor?!
All your life working to provide a nice living to others, slaving away at early hours and corporate injustices, with little payment and all this…all this to be starved, beaten by your father and made fun of as though you don’t possess human emotion only because you lack the appearance of one?? The world can be so cruel but why am I the one feeling rage and you aren’t Gregor? Why am I the one pitying you, while you die…and at peace most importantly. No cursing, no resentment just…accepting what was meant to be.
Is latching on to the desire for control and human emotion really that important? For Gregor seems not, but also he passed on peacefully with no worries with no resentment with no ill intention just…accepted what he was and who the people around him really were.
Welp there I was really shocked when I heard my teacher say Gregor was ok with what he became because I remember my emotions so strong while reading , only to realise that my emotions clouded the truth and the truth is that…nothing really matters huh, everything is laid out for you to live in, why fret in negative emotions which only complicate the whole concept of living…so YEAH!!!
