Franzeska (@olderthannetfic) has done a nice analysis of shipping in nearly 700 FFN fics:

It is amazing how het-centric it is, coming from an AO3 perspective.  But this aligns (in terms of relative ranking, if not exact numbers) with my much smaller recent look at ~100 FFN works (as part of my Gender Representation in Movie Fandoms analysis): 

However, Franzeska’s FFN analysis is almost certainly more accurate (because it’s based on a bigger sample*), and it also includes other categories like Gen.  Yay!  Looking forward to citing and reusing her stats in future work.

I’m hoping to have some Wattpad shipping stats soonish for comparison – from what I’ve seen so far, it’s also way more het-focused than AO3.

*Methodology notes:  hoorah for using a population sample size calculator to figure out the necessary size for high confidence interval!  I’ve more recently started doing such calculations, too… but then I don’t always follow through on hand categorizing that many samples when I am daunted by the number, so my results have much lower confidence in those cases.  I will try to annotate that more carefully going forward!  Also, this is a lovely methodology writeup in general.  :)

The most insidious types of fandom racism that actively promotes itself on tumblr and elsewhere (folk who write thousand word essays about how hard it is not to be racist writing fanfiction and etc, and “coming up with a definition for the antis(tm)” that largely focuses on fans of color talking about things that trigger them), all appear to have had roots in the mainstream (and very white) LiveJournal community before the 2007 migration.

And the worst thing about knowing that, is knowing that people listen to them like the grand authorities on all things fandom because their “fandom old”, but they’re lacking in any kind of real wisdom because they’re content to ignore the people who are affected the most by the issues they claim to know better than anyone.

I feel bad for the director Franzeska hired. Whatever shakes out in the end, I hope she gets out of this project with the maximum money and minimum pain.

As any mention of Franzeska’s Kickstarter sends me into a white-hot rage, I can understand if I have other followers/mutuals who feel the same way. So just a heads up that I’m going to be reblogging criticisms of her, but if you want to TS/blacklist them I’ll be tagging all of them “Franzeska”.

I’ve gathered as much. Which is so telling. Like, she actually knows better because she’s been told better but she’s willfully rewriting history and just generally being racist af. 16k+ words of pure utter garbage. But the audacity to claim folks are co-opting social justice terms as if she has any idea what they actually mean or is using them correctly is just HA HA HA girl please take a stadium of seats.

That a white woman like Franzeska can sit down and type out “the co-opting of Social Justice Activism in fandom” to describe actions of actual women of color using the language we by and large created to address the systematic oppression we and our people experience is WILD and a textbook example of Columbusing and erasure. If the language of Social Justice Activism belongs to anyone, it belongs to women of color.

That awful AO3 meta is really making rounds on my dashboard like the Tome of Eternal Darkness.

I’m tempted to read it beyond a paragraph, but, the last time I went against my own “#hoe don’t it” advice, I made a blog and I’m now trying to recover my state of mind from the fractured anxiety ridden mess it is. 

I’m gonna listen to me and not read it.
