granit xhaka and breel embolo of switzerland celebrate making it to the quarterfinals of the 2020 euros after switzerland defeated france 4-5 on penalties in bucharest, romania, 28.06.21
hey hey as someone who did not watch any of the last football games (i think the last one i saw was portugal - germany, which was also one of the first matches.)
can you explain what happened yesterday and today?
thank you!! :)
So as for yesterday, I don't have the faintest clue I just know that both the Netherlands and Portugal (two relatively stable teams who are generally quite good + Portugal has R*naldo) lost against the Czech Republic and Belgium, the underdogs, respectively.
Today Croatia-Spain went 3-5 (but I didn't watch it either) and then tonight thee game of the century happened.
Switzerland scores within the first 15 minutes against France (who is the current world champion). This is already a huge win bc I had never heard of the swiss national team before and they score against the world champion which is already really great?!?!?!? They hold their lead for a really long time, for the entire first half actually and this to the surprise of everyone, myself included bc how the fuck does France not score??? Again, they're world champions for fuck's sake and have some of the most expensive players in the world standing on the field!
(for clarity's sake I should add that I did not watch this game in the regular run time either so this is all just from following the liveticker on google)
But then, in the 57th Minute, Benzema (FRA) not only evens out, but two minutes later scores a second goal and gets France the lead. Now the game is going as most people expected. 75th minute, Pogma scores 3-1 for France. Okay. This should be it, I think, France is going to the quarter final, good for Switzerland though, they can be really proud of themselves.
I leave the liveticker open. In the 81th minute, Switzerland scores another goal. It is now 3-2 with France still in the lead. "Haha, imagine if Switzerland evens out and they go into overtime" I joke. There's only 9 minutes of regular game time left. Switzerland has done everything they could. There's no way they're gonna score. And THEN the impossible happens.
In the 90th minute, 10 seconds shy from the match being over, Mario Gavranovic scores another goal for Switzerland. It is now 3-3. In the first 5 minutes of overtime given, no team scores. As this is the round of sixteen, draws are not allowed, one team has to win. I am on the edge of my seat. Could it be? Could Switzerland, the nt I had never heard of before, force the reigning world champion France into overtime for another 30 minutes?
The referee blows the whistle: it is official. 3-3 and overtime.
30 minutes is a lot of time. France will probably score and win 4-3. Switzerland has done a stellar job already but I promised I would watch the overtime so I turn on the game.
Both teams give their all. The more time passes, the clearer it gets both are desperate for a goal. Fouls, free kicks, every possible attempt to score is taken. The first 15 minutes of overtime pass, short break, still no goal. They start the second half of overtime, now France has to score, right? No one wants to go into penalty, that would be absolutely insane!
Less than a minute left. By sheer dumbassery on France's part, Switzerland gets free kick just outside of France's 16-meter-box. This is going to be the last action in this game. If Switzerland doesn't score, they'll have to go through penalties to determine the winner.
Xhaka shoots.
Xhaka misses big time.
It's gonna be penalties. France is heating up on the side while Switzerland is surprisingly cool in the short break while organisational matters get sorted out.
Switzerland gets the first penalty. They score. France evens out. After four penalties, they're still on a draw. 4-4.
Switzerland lines up their last penalty of this round of 5. They score.
France lines up their last penalty for this round. If they score, they'll have to go through the entire ordeal again. If they miss or Sommer, the swiss goalkeeper somehow catches the shot, Switzerland will win and France will be out of the tournament. At this point, Sommer has jumped into the wrong corner of the goal for the majority of France's penalties.
France shoots, chill and relaxed.
Sommer jumps, arms extended, ready to catch the ball, ready to catch the matchpoint.
And he does! The absolute madlad that is Yann Sommer catches the absolute last and only penalty, Switzerland wins the game and continues to the quarter finals where they will play against Spain! France, the world champion, is kicked out of the european championship! I am losing my heart, cannot believe what I just witnessed and all is well in the world.
(Well, until tomorrow at least where I'll have to suffer the same stress level for Germany vs. England)
