Christmas Panic

“So, what kind of gift are we looking for?” Scott asks as they wander through the mall.

“I just need something that says, I didn’t wait until the last minute to buy you something.” Stiles says agitatedly, flailing limbs.

“But you did wait until the last minute.” Scott replies, unhelpfully.

“Yes, but I’ve been so obsessed with the proposal ideas, that I didn’t even remember it was Christmas, until he said yes.”

“I see, so now, there is Christmas panic?”

Stiles just motions emphatically, as to say, ‘he won the prize’.

“Yes and it’s such a crappy thing, to give a less than thought out gift for the Christmas we spend engaged.” Stiles says, mournful about his mistake in planning.

“So, can’t you use some of the things you thought of for the proposal? What does he like?”

Stiles ponders this, and finally, starts off, slowly, “He loves being subtlety reminded of his childhood, so, yes, I know.” He’s half way run off when he turns back to Scott and yells, “Go find an interesting fantasy novel in that bookstore, and meet me at the coffeehouse in about 30 min.”

Scott obeys, walking to the bookstore, and asking for help to find an interesting, but new-ish fantasy novel.

When he meets Stiles at the coffeehouse, he expects an explanation for the sudden idea, but all he gets is a calm Stiles, drinking hot cocoa and smiling.

“I got him exactly what he used to have during Christmas. It’ll be fabulous.”

The night before

“The question really isn’t if you love me, it’s if you want to do this with me.” Stiles says, kind of unexpectedly.

“Do what?” Derek asks, turning to face him.

“This life, this ... white picket fence and Christmas with my dad and Thanksgiving with Scott and Allison and just, are you ready for this to be your life? ‘Cause I’ve got to be honest here, that’s the life I need right now Derek. It’s the life I’ve been waiting for.” Derek isn’t sure where this is coming from, but know Stiles, it could just as well be a spur of the moment, anxiety fuelled thought, just as it could be something he’s been wondering for months, even years.

“That hasn’t ever been a question for me Stiles. I want this just as bad as you do, simply because it means I get to spend my life with you.” He wrinkles his eyebrows deliberately.  “Although, a white picket fence might be stretching it, don’t you think. We’ll look like a gay ad.”

“Okay, you can pick any color that’s not white or black, and I’ll have it.”

“Does that mean we can get married now? Because we’ll upset your guests if we have to cancel tomorrow. And you know, one thing I’ve dreamed of, is seeing you walk down the aisle.”

“Who said I’d be the one to do that? Why can’t I go first?” Stiles asks dramatically.

Derek just raises an eyebrow, deadpan face and says, “Because someone will have to catch you when you trip coming up to the alter.” He softens his face, and add gently, “Give me this moment, and I’ll give you the rest of my life.”

Stiles tears up a little, and reaches out for a hug. “We’ll make a romantic out of you yet, Derek Hale.”
