In 700 characters: Absolut Fringe review: City West Side Story
Show: City West Side Story Where: Bewley's Café Theatre, Grafton St. When: 6pm today, 9pm Thurs, 6pm Fri and Sat 18 - some dates sold out! Duration: 60 mins Price: €13/€10
What they say:
Is it a play? Is it a comedy? Is it a musical? It’s the harmonious marriage of three worlds in a syncopated fiasco that breaks a few boundaries.
The original score, witty script and comical tone echo the frequency of modern Ireland, a country transformed, devoured and reanimated by the Tiger that came and conquered.
Meet the high-spirited, playful characters who will keep you blissfully elevated with their marvellous ignorance and melodious gibberish and keep you steeped in a giddy frenzy of optimism and brutal hilarity.
Treat your senses to an evening of indulgent impishness!
Written by and starring Eleanor Tiernan, Fred Cooke and Nicola Gainey. Rehearsal space provided by Draíocht
My review in 700 characters:
I knew City West Side Story would bring elements of Fred Cooke and Eleanor Tiernan's comedy into it. I know they can weave a story, can deliver a line, can cheer people up and can make people laugh - but this Fringe show brings their style of comedy into a different form and introduced me to Nicola Gainey who was captivating. I lived in City West from 2000 to 2005 so I could really identify with the story - but to be honest, if you've lived in Dublin any time over the last 20 years you'll get it. It's manic, it's grotesque, there's elements of improv and it's not at all complicated - and that's the best thing about it. The music and songs are great and it will make you smile. It did for me.
Eleanor's been great and given me two tickets to give away. Just comment below to be in with a chance to win!
(If you're going tonight, wish her a happy birthday!)
My thanks to Róisin in Fringe for the review ticket.
