Freddie Hubbard – Ready for Freddie 

Ready for Freddie is the fourth album by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and was released on the Blue Note label in 1962. In 2003, it was remastered and published on CD support. The two alternate takes didn’t appear on the original LP. It features performances by Hubbard, Bernard McKinney, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Art Davis and Elvin Jones. The album was identified by Scott Yanow in his Allmusic essay “Hard Bop” as one of the 17 Essential Hard Bop Recordings.

Reception

The AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 5 stars and stated: “Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard really came into his own during this Blue Note session. He is matched with quite an all-star group (tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Art Davis, and drummer Elvin Jones in addition to Bernard McKinney on euphonium), introduces two of his finest compositions (“Birdlike” and “Crisis”), and is quite lyrical on his ballad feature, “Weaver of Dreams.” Hubbard’s sidemen all play up to par and this memorable session is highly recommended; it’s one of the trumpeter’s most rewarding Blue Note albums.”

Freddie Hubbard – Blues For Miles

Blues for Milesis an album by American jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard recorded in April 1992 in Tokyo and released on the Evidence label.

Reception.

“Given the way Miles Davis sharply criticized Freddie Hubbard in various magazine interviews in the 1970s, it's ironic that this decent but less than essential CD finds Hubbard paying tribute to someone who had such unkind words for him. Davis, to be sure, could be a loose cannon. During interviews, he loved to be provocative for the sake of being provocative. So as brilliantly innovative a musician/composer as Davis was, you couldn't take everything he had to say seriously, and that includes his criticisms of Hubbard. Whatever their differences, Hubbard's affection for Davis' contributions to jazz comes through on Blues for Miles, which was recorded six months after Davis' death in April 1992. Joined by pianist Billy Childs, bassist Tony Dumas, and drummer Ralph Penland, Hubbard sticks to a muted trumpet and salutes Davis' standards period. Though Hubbard's "Blues for Miles (Hip-Hop Bop)" acknowledges the funky electric Davis of the '70s and '80s, his main focus is the lyrical Davis of the '50s, who he pays tribute to on such standards as "Skylark," "Autumn Leaves," and "Come Rain or Come Shine." Although not among Hubbard's great albums, Blues for Miles is generally likable - of course, the master trumpeter who gave us gems like Hub-Tones and Ready for Freddie in the '60s, and Red Clay and Straight Life in the '70s, was a lot more than simply likable. Casual listeners would be much better off with one of those five-star albums; Blues for Miles is primarily for collectors and Hubbard's die-hard fans.” - Alex Henderson, AllMusic.

Freddie Hubbard – Minor Mishap

Minor Mishap is a studio album featuring American jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard recorded in August 1961. The album was first released in 1966 exclusively in the Netherlands and in United Kingdom as Groovy! under the Fontana label, and then re-released by Prestige Records in 1970 under Duke Pearson’s name as Dedication! and appears on CD without alternate takes by that title as well.

Reception.

The AllMusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4 stars and stated:”This is one of Freddie Hubbard’s more obscure sessions of the 1960s. Actually, it was originally led by the forgotten trombonist Willie Wilson (who died in 1963) … This is an excellent hard bop date and well worth picking up by straight-ahead jazz fans.”

Freddie Hubbard – Hub Cap

Hub Cap is an album by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, released on the Blue Note label in 1961. Reviewing the album for The Guardian in 2003, British jazz critic John Fordham wrote:”From Hubbard’s opening solo on the flying, boppish title track, which crackles with his trademark urgency, crisp, flaring sound and hell-for-leather attack, the music throws you back into a jazz era when the muscular dynamism of hard-bop was at the sharp end of a still commercially popular jazz.” The AllMusic review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave the album three and half stars and stated:”On Hub Cap, his third effort as a leader, Freddie Hubbard sticks to the tried-and-true hard bop formula, which is something of a mixed blessing. There’s no question that much of this music is enjoyable, but it’s not quite up to the standards of its two predecessors.”

Freddie Hubbard – Sky Dive

Sky Dive is the twentieth album by jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, recorded in 1972. It was his fourth album released on Creed Taylor’s CTI label and features performances by Hubbard, Keith Jarrett, George Benson, Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, Airto Moreira and Ray Barretto.

Critical reception

AllMusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4 stars and stated:” Freddie Hubbard's fourth CTI recording (and the second one with Don Sebesky arrangements) certainly has a diverse repertoire. In addition to his originals "Povo" and "Sky Dive" (both of which are superior jam tunes), the trumpeter stretches out on the theme from The Godfather and Bix Beiderbecke's "In a Mist." The charts for the brass and woodwinds are colorful; there is a fine supporting cast that includes guitarist George Benson, Keith Jarrett on keyboards, and flutist Hubert Laws; and Hubbard takes several outstanding trumpet solos.”

Legacy: It followed Hubbard's Grammy-winning First Light and is considered one of his most accessible and commercially successful works from his prolific CTI era.
