Harvest Festival 2015
My first experience touring a vineyard was pretty amazing.
Thanks to Messina Hof, my Saturday morning was filled with grape picking in the sun, grape stomping, a vineyard tour, wine tastings, and a catered lunch. This past Saturday, I attended the Harvest Festival 2015 at Messina Hof in Bryan, Texas. If you didnt catch my event article last week, check out the details here. The event started at 8AM. Due to us being on CP time on this fabulous Saturday, we made it there right before 9 but just in time for grape picking. We were greeted by the friendly staff and easily fell into line with one of the groups that set off towards the vineyard.
Grape Picking
Our day started with grape picking in the vineyard. We were given a grape cutter (handy knife) and on our way to be semi-professionals. For about an hour we ventured out into the field to cut down the voluptuous grapes off of their vines. The task itself was pretty calming…yet sexy at the same time. Knowing your picking the grapes that will eventually go towards some tasteful wine is all the more rewarding. Messina Hof started a competition to see who could find the “big kahuna.” We’ll talk about that later. We were even encouraged to try the grapes right off the vine, since their vineyard does not use any harmful pesticides or chemicals. Surprisingly grapes right off of the vines are much sweeter than the grapes we find in stores.
Fun fact: It is more beneficial for their to be dry weather so that the grapes are ready to be harvested.
Wine Tasting/Winery Tour
After we spent sometime in the sun picking grapes, we headed over to the inside of the winery. The top 7 finalists were chosen for the big kahuna challenge. Each contestant had to perform talent using their grapes. We saw anything from back springs, singing the Texas A&M chant, and the largest selfies the winery has seen. Of course, when anyone under 6 is involved, their an automatic shoe in for winning. I mean, who can beat doe eyes and a baby voice? So naturally, the 4 year old who did a back spring while holding his grapes, made it to top 3 along with two other contestants. After everyone stated how they would change the world, little handsome 4 year old won the competition.
Now onto the fun part. Word of advise: eat something before you attend a wine tasting before noon. There were 3 different wines that we tried. A white wine, a red wine, and a sweet dessert red wine. Here’s some tips for tasting your wine for maximum appreciation:
Swirl your wine around ever so lightly in your glass. This will allow you to capture the true aroma of your wine
Take a sniff of your wine, one nostril at a time. It was even suggested to stick one nostril down into the glass. (Fun fact: Only one nostril works at a time. Our nostrils switch duties after every 4 hours. )
Take two sips of your wine. The first sip is to get your palette acclimated to this new beverage. The second sip will allow to determine which flavors are in your wine.
There are so many rules to pairing the perfect wine with your meal but here are a few things to keep in mind: White wine goes best with lighter meals such as seafood and chicken. Red wine goes best with red meat and your heavier meals. Dessert is…well… for dessert.
Check out Messina Hof for more information regarding their Harvest Festival which is going on for the next two weekends in August. They also have amazing rental spaces for weddings, parties, etc. and even a B&B at their 3 locations!
