YOUNG ROYALS 1.05
Stella & Fredrika Young Royals | 2.04: "I´d rather be secretly in love with her than be the ex that she hates"
Thinking about the moment at the end of season 1 of YR when the girls are discussing the sex tape and Fredrika brings up the need for a surrogate, and how that surrogate would have to be super blue blooded.
Like that is the moment that Fredrika shows that for all her ditziness she understands how this works. She understands that just because the Prince is with a guy doesn’t mean that she is out of the running of accumulating power for herself through Wille.
She shows that she knows what millions of noble and upper class women have known throughout history - a woman’s power in an elitist patriarchal society is not in who her husband is it’s in who her son is.
It could have been so easy for them to have some of the girls bemoaning the fact that they don’t have the chance to snag the role of queen, but instead they have Fredrika playing 4d chess being like - I may not be Queen but there is still a chance that my son could be King one day.
I don’t know I just think it’s really telling of Fredrika and the story about class they are telling, that Fredrika in response to the tape can instantly readjust her expectations of what power she can get out of this.
Maybe she might even be thinking that she might even have a better chance of accumulating reflected power in these circumstances. Before the Wille/Simon thing came out it seemed like all the girls were expecting something to happen with Felice.
But if Wille is with Simon, then Fredrika doesn’t even need to convince Wille to like her, she just needs to put herself forward as the most suitable surrogate mother.
All the different parts of this show are so interesting
I love reading posts about people’s favourite moments and episodes so here is mine from Season 2. Please do share yours so I can get my fix.
Favourite episode - Four
Top five moments from episode four:
5) Wille on the Table
I mean what an opener! Wille panicking about Henry seeing him and Felice. You know as an audience Henry is SO going to tell everyone and are just waiting for it. I forgot about the whole “on the table” thing so when it happened I was like arggggghhhhh…. Noooooo….. oh poor Simon. Simon’s face throughout this scene is just heart breaking and it just sets the episode up so well.
4) The Kiss
We waited and waited for it and thought it would never happen. Beautifully shot, beautifully acted - again a fantastic example of YR needing no dialogue to convey very strong emotions. Loved it! But not my favourite moment from episode 4!
3) Fredrika and Stella getting ready
Ah the beauty of touch. The close up of Fredrika and Stella getting ready. Stella gazing up and placing her fingers on Fredrika’s collar bone. If you notice Stella’s finger slightly shakes when she is doing it. Just beautiful. If we get a season 3 I will be SO invested in them as a couple.
2) The Locker Room
So, I love, love jealous Simon and his face after he has thrown the ball at Wille’s head. Having not really given Wille any real indication of his feelings or indeed if he even still wants a relationship with him, Simon leaves during the table scene and then looks at Wille with fire in this eyes and a ball in his hand.
Leading us to the locker room, where we have the best argument/chat between Wille and Simon across the two seasons. We don’t see Simon lose control very often but it is the start of him coming back to Wille. I have to admit on first watch I really thought that it was it for these two characters - I just couldn’t see a way back for them. Which leads to why number 1) is my favourite scene in Young Royals ever….
1) “I get it…. You don’t love me anymore”
It is a short moment in a jam-packed episode of excellence but I have watched this bit over and over again. The whole very intense atmosphere created at the ball - the music, costumes, all the cast there - was fantastic. Then, the lead up with Wille trying to be “polite” and Simon just looking at him. You see Wille go to the kitchen desperately trying to keep it together and then Simon also adjusting his tie, breathing. It’s all too much. Simon turns to find Wille - I held my breath - and Wille says: “I get it.. you don’t love me anymore.” And, Simon’s face - I do, I do!
Thank you for reading if you got this far! Would love to read yours.
Ps I know I left out the fish! That would have been 6!
