𝙟𝙤𝙞𝙣 𝙢𝙮 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙙 𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙧?

𝙗𝙪𝙮 𝙢𝙚 𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙚?

Rin had asked you to help him draw an ice bath.

It’s a first for you. As in, he’s never asked you to help him draw an ice bath. You knew he took them. It’s what he would tell you that he was going to do every time he sent you home from the pool early. And you know they’re good for swimmers- for athletes in general. All your time playing rookie assistant for the school’s nursing staff has taught you that ten times over. But as far as you know, all this time, you were just supposed to be there to time him whenever he decided to practice solo. That’s what he told you, at least.

You weren’t really needed for anything else. Anything beyond using a stopwatch, really.

Of course, he didn’t seem to mind that you were always ready with his water bottle or his towel whenever he needed it. And he didn’t exactly complain whenever you would show him the videos you took of his form while in the pool. But he wasn’t telling you to do that for him. Nor was he telling you to send him the videos after you showed them to him.

Yet, he would always watch them. You know because you would find the read receipts on the messages to always be just a little after you had left the pool. You know because you caught him rewatching the videos on his own time. Even though he tries to hide it from you.

Although you didn’t love all your work going mostly thankless, you never took it personally. You heard from his sister early on that he has a lot going on in his head that’s made him this way. His competitive nature. His time abroad. Old rivalries beginning anew. The dreams he wants to accomplish. You can’t even begin to understand him. He’s never opened up to you about any of that stuff, after all.

Besides, he was never mean to you. He was a little cold and standoffish. He could be intense and a little rough around the edges. But he was never mean. So you didn’t mind helping him. And it made you feel good when you were being useful. Even if he didn’t exactly show it that often. But that’s what made this moment so special.

“Could you…could you get the bath out for me? And an extra towel?”

That’s what made you so happy. So, so happy to be here. To be helpful.

Rin was still in the pool when he asked. He was just floating idly by the edge as he handed off the water bottle you gave him back to you, the water rippling and splashing together with his every move. His goggles were already pushed up to rest on his forehead. And he was still panting a little as he held onto the tile surface of the pool’s edge and looked up at you.

You saw his face fall when he noticed you already had your backpack on. And despite this being a rather new occurrence, you didn’t think anything of it. And why would you? It’s not like he would say anything. He had always dismissed you whenever he was done with his last lap. Plus, it was getting late after all. The sun had set a long time ago. And the moonlight can only shed so much light on your pathway home.

But he did. He did say something.

“Could you…could you get the bath out for me? And an extra towel?”

And you almost didn’t process it at first.

“Huh?” You had responded at first, the sound leaving your lips dumbly. It took a few seconds for you to take Rin’s request into your brain as you were just so caught off guard by it. In the time it takes you to realize that he asked something of you that didn’t involve timing his laps, Rin’s lips began to tug downwards into the shape of a frown as he shrank back a little into the pool. But a second later, you caught on. And in no time at all, there was a bright smile on your face. One that probably looked far too eager to help with tasks such as setting up someone else’s ice bath at who knows what time in the evening. “Oh! Yeah, of course! Are you sure, though?”

Still, there were unspoken questions there as you spoke your last few words, even between the beaming smile you had on your face. Unspoken questions that you hoped to communicate with both your lingering tone and your eyes as you held the boy’s gaze. You hoped he picked up on it. And knowing him, he probably did. Still, you had to know. You had to ask:

Are you sure this is what you want?

Are you sure you want my help with this?

Are you sure you want me to stay longer?

It’s a little dumb to question it now. Especially since you’re questioning what they literally just asked you to do. But you know it’s dumb. You know this. You know this…but you didn’t want to get too excited. You didn’t want to think you were making progress that wasn’t actually there. You wanted to be close. You did. You really did. Despite all his prickly edges and his intense nature, you liked Rin. You liked the boy you would sometimes see underneath those guarded walls. You liked the boy who would unknowingly show off that little shark-tooth smile whenever you were ready to hand off a freshly topped-off water bottle. You liked the boy who pushed himself harder than others would push him simply because he wanted- no, he needed this for himself. Whatever “this” is.

“It’s fine. You can help. Plus, I would…”

But you still wanted to be close to him. You supported him. You wanted to be there for him. And most of all? You wanted to be more than just the one person with a stopwatch who was willing to put up with random late nights at the pool with little to no thanks for all your effort. But now?

“I would really appreciate it, thank you.”

You’re starting to think he might want that too.
