Speaking of interactive story-telling, Yume Nikki has always been one of my favorite free-roam exploration games. The entire game is a great little collection of minimalist elements stretched to cover in ways that make them stand out beautifully. There's no dialogue, absolutely no direction, and still manages to tell a compelling story.
Creating and maintaining a proper atmosphere is pretty much the one thing I ask out of anything, and Yume Nikki has no shortage of great atmosphere.

Once you've found all the effects, drop them in the center of the room with the doors and wake up again for the ending. I need to say this, because there really isn't any hint as to how to find the ending without being told that much >_>
