Controversial US Patriot Act:
extended as The Freedom Act
We are not catching terrorists with the Patriot Act, we are instead taking away human rights. Yours!
In May 2011, President Obama signed the Patriot Sunsets Extension Act of 2011, a four year extension of three key provisions of the Patriot Act :-
searches of business records;
conducting surveillance on individuals suspected of terrorist-related activities not linked to a terrorist group.
Parts of the Patriot Act expired on June 1, 2015, The Freedom Act on June 2, 2015 restored the expired parts and renewed the Act through to 2019.
Section 215 was amended to stop #NSA mass surveillance of phone data. Now this data is indefinitely retained by the phone companies, and can be accessed by the NSA, other government agencies and unofficial third parties.
The law continues to authorize indefinite detentions without charges, plus permit law enforcement officers to search a home or business without the consent or knowledge of the owner or occupant, as well as the expanded use of National Security Letters (NSLs).
NSLs allow the #FBI to issue warrants to obtain private records or personal information, without judicial oversight or a judge’s signature; essential elements for public accountability and transparency. The FBI agents who issue these NSLs are not accountable, and in most cases, their identities are shielded.
Despite the challenges and Federal Court ruling that many provisions are unconstitutional, all three branches of government support this law that bypasses the Constitution and takes away human rights of American citizens. While provoking terrorism at home and abroad.
