“Well I can’t just not visit; you’re like my mom. Sorry for not telling you first. Mark just happened to be going and I didn’t know about it until like an hour beforehand. He never really plans these things.
“Am I taller than you now…? I didn’t notice! I’m still shorter than everyone else.”
“A-Aha, now wait a second, ‘like your mum’? O-oh! Oh ahaha, really? I.. Wow, okay, I wasn’t expecting to hear that.” Christ, it was so infuriating, just how quickly she could lose her cool when thrown off guard. Why couldn’t she just pull herself together.
Ah, but the truth was, something like this was, for her at least, a little hard to just bounce back from. All her life, for as far back as she could remember, the one thing Nonna had always wanted but could absolutely never have, was a child. The fact that she was infertile to the point of not even having the organs necessary to conceive a child was easily, easily the worst thing about what she was, and it had been the hardest thing to deal with when at her lowest points in life.
Logan was, without a doubt, the closest thing she had to a child, and there was no denying that she’d seen him as a sort of surrogate son for a while, but she would never, in a million years have guessed that he saw her in a similar way. He was incredibly hard to read, and reading people had never been her forte, so really it was no wonder that this came as a complete surprise to her.
“Oh, oh dear,” she blurted out, suddenly uncomfortably aware of the tears that had sprang to her eyes without warning, “oh no, hah! Look at me.. Getting all weepy over this, it’s ridiculous, I’m a grown woman. Logan, I’m sorry, you didn’t come all this way to see me blubber all over you, after all.”
