This week is Banned Books Week, which celebrates the freedom to read, celebrates banned and challenged books, and highlights individuals who have been persecuted for writings they have produced, circulated, or read. I have always believed strongly in the freedom to read, as I believe the suppression of knowledge is one of the worst things a human being can do. (In short, I believe the suppression of knowledge creates a culture of fear and superstition and prevents the growth of critical thinking.) The stack I am sharing with you today consists of novels from my own personal collection that have all been listed as “Frequently Challenged” by the American Library Association, and all of them are considered classic novels (all of these except Lord of the Flies are also written by American authors). Do you have any frequently banned or challenged books in your collection? Do you have a favorite banned or challenged book? Feel free to share your picks in the comments! #bannedbooksweek #americanlibraryassociation #freedomtoread #freedomofknowledge #literacyawareness #tokillamockingbird #thecatcherintherye #gonewiththewind #theawakening #thegreatgatsby #beloved #thegrapesofwrath #lordoftheflies #afarewelltoarms #harperlee #jdsalinger #katechopin #fscottfitzgerald #tonimorrison #johnsteinbeck #williamgolding #ernesthemingway https://www.instagram.com/p/B2wpEBDpcwz/?igshid=1q2h5r8osrpa7
