((Here's a headcanon for you...
In the last post, and the ask before, there seems to be an emphasis on freedom there. Ariel's not like... in captivity. He's not someone's slave either. (With Marluxia, that's a bit different anyway.) It isn't as though he's being forced into something.
But his personality includes being freedom-loving. He's Sagittarius. He's half horse, even if he has traits that are not at all like Sagittarius. But also, he's known he's had powers for nearly 10 years. He's had to hide them, and he hadn't known about his ability to become invisible until after he met Marluxia.
Because of this, he felt a bit caged. He was daring, to practice his powers as often as he has and it scared him a lot when he'd hurt his arm back when he was 16. Only half because he had never experienced real pain before but also because what if someone found out?
He didn't know about the Telchines then, but he was sure that he'd be called a freak, tormented, or even worse the government or some scientists would take him into custody and start to do tests on him. It was so bad, his fear, that he even lied to his own father to keep that from happening. He's an honest guy, his eyes are just not the kind that would lie to others.
Wings represent freedom. To him, who's been living hidden away from the world, trapped by his society itself, they had been wonderful.
Haaaah, interesting how he is just that much more like his namesake.
Is there more toil? Since thou dost give me pains,
Let me remember thee what thou hast promised,
Which is not yet performed me.
What is ’t thou canst demand?
Now let's hope he doesn't have to endure like... What was it, 10 years trapped in a tree? Or perhaps it was 12? ))
