#OTD/On This Day: November 4th, 1989, 5 days before the fall of the #BerlinWall: an estimated one million East Berliners took to the Alexanderplatz to demand democratization, #freeelections and freedom to travel. What's remarkable is that the protesters weren't actually demanding the fall of the Wall, though the continuation of this "peaceful revolution" served to demonstrate the frailty of the Socialist East German government. Another remarkable fact: it was the first government sanctioned protest in East Berlin in 40 years. Ironically, the marxist East German government had planned to use the protests for their own messaging. #civilsociety #Deutschland #Germany #irfministerial #socialism #stasi #WallStories (at Alexanderplatz Berlin) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4cmDowj1Rv/?igshid=y7b7qsrgp332
