When I started this blog 3 years ago, I wrote that it was to document my challenge to survive on food waste. I only had an inkling then that it is really no challenge at all. Every meal of mine is amazing, the challenge is really to both witness how much is wasted and struggle with the fact that you can’t single handedly save it all. BUT that’s why people are working really hard to alleviate the current absurd food waste problem. Put pressure on your local supermarkets, restaurants, corner shops, cafes etc etc etc to overall try to REDUCE waste rather than simply donating to waste projects. We don’t want waste going to landfill but more than that we don’t want it to exist in the first place.
We traded some bin food for these home grown tomatoes sitting next to these freegan mushrooms. We were trying to give bin food away but we’ll take these toms anytime!
Plums! These aren’t from a bin, they’re from some trees near me. A friend and I set out to forage not knowing what we would return with. To our delight we found hundreds and hundreds of plums! There is fruit falling all over the country which is very edible. Check out what you’re picking up, don’t eat anything poisonous and enjoy free jam, crumbles chutneys and pies. All year round!
This photo represents months and months of photos that I took on my mums camera that she either deleted or lost thinking I’d uploaded them already. I’m sad I can’t share them with you because there was so much food waste! This seems to be the only photo remaining from those months so it is weighty. While all these months of photos from my mums camera seem like a lot of waste, it doesn’t include photos from my camera, or food from bins I didn’t go to in my area, or in my county, or country, the waste of suppliers and docks and farmers. It’s a drop in the ocean really, but it feels like a lot regardless.
Moving house
A friend of mine is going travelling and had to clear her house out. I'm sure many of you understand the stress of moving and in an ideal world packing everything you own and moving it would be the way. However, using as an example the previously blogged about 'student moving time', it doesn't go that way for many people who end up throwing out lots of stuff that's been used and cannot be taken for whatever reason. Thankfully my friend hates chucking stuff out about as much as me! So she gave it away to friends or on Freecycle. If you're unfamiliar with Freecycle get googling! In the UK there are many Freecycle groups and many other groups like it around the world. It is an online community where people post things they no longer need or ask for things they need. It is a great resource to avoid landfill and you find many weird and wonderful things on there, I have previously posted things I thought no one would want that have been taken.
So here is some of the stuff she gave me! Remember, opened foods are still usable and there are people who will use them :) So Freecycle, Gumtree, Street Skills this stuff away before you think about binning it.
Hi Guys! Once again sorry for the lacking photo quality! My life is in a transitional period and I'm using my phone..sorry. Anyway, as we know it's not about the pic quality right? All this stuff was from one bin I believe! It's not a big shop, just a little shop in a little village. Think about how many little village shops there are in the uk alone, not even thinking about the chains, petrol stations and hyper stores, off licences and so on.
