When you reread your own stories, you almost always find a new detail you could include in your present story (I mean when they are in a series or use the same character)
I read last night in Repercussions that when Sierra was 12, her trafficker used to tie her in a dark closet for hours as punishment for trying to escape. I'm thinking she has some claustrophobia from this. (I don't remember if I realized this before) But she tries to mitigate its effects, as she tries to crush down any weakness in order to do her job (which is itself motivated by fighting the kind of man who enslaved her, fighting the kind of injustice she experienced). She can't afford weakness. However, this gets to her a little more than most. If she's trapped, she can't hide her fear as much as with other things.
And of course she despises being trapped. In any form. Because she knows intimately what it's like for your freedom and human dignity to be taken away almost totally. Never wants to be remotely close to that again
In some ways, it's why she resisted any close relationships with people. And even resisted fighting for justice for its own sake. It had to much suggestion of being tied down. Of course course excuse was, it's too much of a weakness she can't afford.
But with the recent human trafficking investigation, taking her close to her past, she has to acknowledge she does care about this, she does want to fight injustice. For personal reasons. And if getting close to someone is a weakness... maybe she's willing to make that sacrifice. To end the...perhaps pretense of objectivity. And maybe being totally independent was a weakness in itself... she begins to grudgingly acknowledge its nice to have people to talk to, people she can confide in
It all started with Jason... during a mission that was a totally professional one. It became personal... she identified with him in a way, got close when she saw he was targeted by a man who reminded her of the one who trapped her long ago.
