City of Heroes

The perks:
You can make your own superhero (so long as the character name or likeness is NOT copywritten by anyone), and go on solo missions to patrol the streets of Paragon City to arrest criminals, or, you can join the villains in the Rogue Isles, to cause mayhem and chaos.
You can dress your hero however you want (again only so far as it doesnt look like a copywritten hero or villain) with hundreds of costume choices available
Now, keep in mind, this game is over 20 years old, but, the game itself is free, no micro transactions, no subscription payments

Free to play, and no costumes and/or base building items and/or powers are locked behind a paywall! Most computers bought within the past 15 years will run this game!
There are player driven events, such as club nights, an in game based radio station (The Cape Radio), Super Group base building contests, costume contests, haunted houses, coordinated monster raids that happen weekly, or sometimes daily, and more!
There are in game annual holiday events, like the Valentines event that just started where you get to attend, or crash a wedding
There's a host of players willing to help newcomers, or people just coming back to the game after long absences, a community of modders and tool builders to aid with accessibility for plugins (such as map mods, character power build planning or item finders), and more!
Also, the Homecoming server got the nod from the original developers to keep the servers active, and add more content! They're always updating and fixing bugs, to make things run smoother, for people to enjoy the game as intended.
