The franchise was established in 1989 as an expansion team, and such notable NBA stars as Shaquille O’Neal, Penny Hardaway, Patrick Ewing, Grant Hill, Tracy McGrady, Steve Francis, Dwight Howard, and Vince Carter have played for the club throughout its young history. As of 2017, the Magic have played in the NBA playoffs ten times and reached the NBA Finals in 1995.
The Orlando Magic was founded in 1989 as an expansion franchise. The franchise was awarded to a group headed by businessman and part-time actor Richard DeVos and his family. The Magic became the first-ever major sports franchise in Florida, following an expansion fee of $32.5 million paid to the NBA. The Magic were one of four expansion franchises that joined the NBA in that off-season, along with the Charlotte Hornets, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Miami Heat.
The Magic originally played their home games at the Orlando Arena, which they shared with the then-Orlando Solar Bears of the International Hockey League. The team’s first head coach was Matt Guokas, who also served as the team’s first general manager. One of the first players signed by the expansion Orlando Magic was Shaquille O’Neal, who was the first overall pick of the 1992 NBA draft. The Magic used the Shaq attraction to fill more than 21,000 seats in their arena on opening night.
