Kid fic/parent fic prompts
The cake looks like shit.
Granted, it was all they could afford in the shop, aside from straight up stealing, and the Chaotix don't steal, so there wasn't really any choice, but that doesn't make it look any less like shit. It's lopsided and a bit banged up, which is probably the reason why it was on such a steep sale, and the frosting is of a dangerously neon color that promises endless hours of sugar rush.
And still, it is cake, and they managed to snatch it, so that ought to count for something. Besides, it's not like Charmy seems to care - he's too busy bouncing in excitement at the thought of dessert and celebration to notice just about anything else regarding the whole business. In fact, Vector can barely hold him back while Espio lights the candle on top, lest they set fire to the whole house and have to pay even more money.
"Sit down, kid," the crocodile grumbles, his grip tightening around the handful of bee he has to keep in place. "You're gettin' too big for this, I'm gonna have to put you on a leash soon. When did you grow so much, by the way? Weren't you still a little baby yesterday or something?"
"No!" Charmy protests, though he's still giggling in amusement. "I'm not a baby! I'm a real detective, and I want the first slice of cake! It's my birthday!"
"Uh. Are you sure? Can't really believe it."
"I can," Espio mutters, putting off the used matchstick. "He eats nearly as much as you do, and that is a feat."
Vector should probably feel offended, but a part of him is genuinely amazed that they even got to this point, so he's too distracted to care much. They didn't just manage to keep the kid alive all these years, which is already a bloody miracle - it's the fact that said years seem to have basically flown by that stuns him the most, to be quite honest. In his mind, it's not so long ago that Charmy was screaming the house down while teething, or learning to fly with a fretful Espio at his heels.
And yet, the boy he's holding right now is strong and brave and yeah, maybe reckless, too, but that can't really be helped, with the life they lead. He's still small, but he has grown so much he might as well be a different bee.
It's a shocker. But it's also the best stroke of luck they've ever had, all things considered.
So Vector lets go of him, and watches as Charmy blows the candle with only minimal worry about the lad's wings catching on fire, and for once, everything's right in the world.
"Happy birthday, Charmy. Can't wait to see what this real big detective has in store, heh?"
