Naughty Dog, Inc. is an American video game developer and is also known as Jam Software before renaming in 1989. The company is headquartered in Santa Monica, California. In 1984 it has been founded as an independent developer by Jason Rubin and Andy Gavin. In the year 2001 it was acquired by Sony Computer Entertainment. Rubin and Gavin produced more successful games progressively, such as, for the Sega Genesis, Rings of Power and for the 3DO, Way of the Warrior. A very low-budget but plausible offering, The latter prompted the Universal Interactive Studios to sign duo to a 3-title deal & also fund company's expansion.

Mark Cerny, had been involved deeply with the successful game Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for Sega, convinced the company to focus its resources on creating character-based game which would exploit the 3D capabilities of new systems. This led to release of Crash Bandicoot ultimately for the PlayStation on 31 August, 1996. The company developed 3 Crash Bandicoot sequels over next several years. It was announced in January 2001 that Sony would acquire the Naughty Dog. After the Crash Team Racing development, Naughty Dog began working on Jak and Daxter for the video game console PlayStation 2 (PS2).

Jason Rubin the co-founder and president of Naughty Dog studio, left the company to work on new project and named Iron and the Maiden. Naughty Dog in addition to the inhouse game team, is home to the Initiative for a Common Engine Team (abbreviated as ICE Team) one of SCE Worldwide Studios's central technology groups. In 2007 Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the company's first title for PlayStation 3 was released, in 2009, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was released and in the month of November Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception was released. The company was known for having history of developing one franchise per console; a trend which has garnered the criticism from fans. It lasted until the Naughty Dog developer announced a new intellectual property The Last of Us at the Spike Video Game Awards on 10th of December, 2011 for PlayStation 3, which had been in development by second team at the studio & has released in the month of June 2013 to overwhelming the universal acclaim. The studio in the beginning of early 2014, experienced numerous departures, and highest level departure being lead the Uncharted writer Amy Hennig. Initiative for a Common Engine is often abbreviated as ICE Team which describes original purpose of the studio. This team focuses on creating the core graphics technologies for first party published titles of Sony, including graphics processing pipelines, the low level game engine components, supporting tools, debugging tools and graphics profiling.
