Your tag sums it up. There are male figure skaters, most of them pretty gay, and one of them owns a brown "poodle." There was even a wedding ring episode but they call it "good luck charms."

Kim, you are clearly a David Bowie fan. Please recommend some songs/albums of his to me because somehow I have none. Tell me which ones were your favorites. *hugs*

Well, my music cred gets taken away because my honest fave Bowie album is the Labyrinth soundtrack. That music and that movie is essentially my childhood and I could listen to it and only it on repeat until the end of time and be happy.

But in terms of actual David Bowie albums, you can’t go wrong with Hunky Dory, Diamond Dogs, Space Oddity, Let's Dance, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, The Man Who Sold the World, Heroes, and Earthling.

I mean, really anything is quality, it's just finding the songs that resonate with you.

Yup! It’s at the IFC Center (which is on 3rd Street and 6th Avenue) tomorrow at 9. I think tickets are still available on their website.

Legolas’s childhood! Well, here are my headcanons based on what I’ve read about Tolkien’s Legendarium and the PJ films--

I do think Legolas is an only child. I would imagine that in a society were you are not expected to die, that having only one child or no children at all would be perfectly permissible. I’ve read the theory that there would be no way that Thranduil would send his only son and heir on an errand to Rivendell, but I don’t honestly see why that would be true, particularly in a society where Thranduil could technically rule forever. Legolas seems exemplary among elves and quite lively besides, I see no reason why he wouldn’t be sent on missions. 

In terms of PJ’s films, yes absolutely, especially since it was established that his mother’s death left his father so bereft that marrying again and having additional children would unimaginable for Thranduil. If he’d had siblings that were just off screen, I do not think his mother’s memory would be so unknown to him. 

I think Legolas was suuuper spoiled when he was first born, when Thranduil and his Queen were happy. I think Legolas is the precious gem in Thranduil’s life. And then I think it starkly, abruptly changed when his mother died and with Sauron’s influence creeping over their forest. 

I do think that Thranduil was as hands on as he could be, but I think he grew distant in time, as happens with many fathers and sons. Perhaps even his grief pulled him away. I like to think that as Legolas grew into adulthood they had a kind of reconciliation, and after that a deep love and respect formed between them (especially since they’re all they’ve got). 

I’m not too keen on how PJ portrayed their relationship, or at least how he had it play out. I don’t mind conflict if the resolution is satisfying, but it didn’t do it for me. I’d wished they’d had a better more direct interaction in the film. I really hated that Legolas sided with Tauriel after she drew her arrow at his father. That is unacceptable to me. It made sense for Tauriel and where her head was at-- but Legolas-- I don’t care how lovesick!puppy he is, that is his only family that is being threatened there (and his king besides).  I would have rather that be a moment of clarity for Legolas that snapped him out of his Tauriel!dreamgirl fantasy. 

My fantasy scenario would have been that the Battle and the death all around them would have made it clear what was important to both of them-- family. The ending was supremely unsatisfying to me, saved only by the acting acumen of Lee Pace. 

I love the idea that Lee Pace mentioned of Thranduil as a kind of “Fisher King” where he influences or is influenced by the forest. I imagine him to be very in tune with Middle Earth, especially his forest, and I think the darkness that came to the forest had a direct affect on him.  

Anime-- I used to watch a few anime, but that was ages ago. The last thing I watched/read was Saiyuki. I liked the manga better than the show. Do you have anime recommendations for me?
