Once a symbol of Hope and Freedom... FOCAP Statement It is a sad day for journalism. The Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines strongly condemns the decision of a Myanmar court sentencing two Reuters journalists to seven years in prison under its draconian Official Secrets Act. It is imperative that journalists everywhere be able to honestly and fairly report the news, without intimidation or fear of reprisal. We are in solidarity with colleagues around the world in calling on the government of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to do the right thing and free Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo. We commiserate with and support their families and colleagues. Their incarceration sends a chilling message, but their courage will continue to inspire. Free and responsible journalism is not a crime nor the enemy and is a critical pillar for any democracy.
