The public library is a beautiful beautiful place. I met a librarian angel today!! 😁

I was trying to put a hold on a book on the library desktop next to the help desk, and I had my sign in information pulled up on my phone. On my laptop at home I have it set up to autofill, because it's a 14 digit number and I really struggle copying numbers down. I do it soooo slowly and I mix up the numbers. So I mistyped it once and then I'm trying to do it again slower, mumbling the digits to myself and backtracking when I realize there's no one around but me and the help desk librarian so I ask her for help. I stumble over myself and explain the trouble. She says she can scan my library card and hold the book I need on her computer. Yay! So she does that, making small talk with me and she asks me if it would help for her to copy the number phonetically on a slip of paper.

I was like. What? Oh uh actually yes! Yes please. Wow thanks!

She writes out all fourteen digits off of my library profile and hands me my library card with the paper wrapped around it. She asks if I can read her handwriting, if I need her to write it bigger, asks if I want it laminated for free. I felt like if I was subjected to her kindness for another second I'd probably cry so I said no. God bless u library angel.

"6/20/25 lyft"

My lyft driver was an older man with a white beard named John.

He had a screen hung on the back of the passenger seat head rest.

Playing a slideshow of fun facts and other things.

It said he'd lived in Austin 8 years.

Don't throw up in his car.

He has narcan, if you want.

Don't have sex in his car.

If you want to vent, he'll listen.

Don't be negative, no arguing about politics or religion.

Yes, the car goes fast. No, he won't drive it fast.

And that he also worked in hospitality.

(There were two cups under the screen, mints and jolly ranchers.)

I took a mint.

Asked him if he drove for lyft a lot.

He said "Two or three days a week."

"Or days I don't work my main job."

"I like to talk to people."

I work at an escape room.

We have to follow a script when getting to know guests.

Mostly its kind of stressful.

I listen and watch them play the game, give clues when they need help. All day.

It can be fun.

He said "Sounds creative, at least."

"It can be. I like to write down what people say."

And, "I wish it was more creative. Lots of rules."

(He wants to write down the wild things some people say in his car.)

(Like younger kids, my age. He doesn't understand a word they're saying.)

(And a hooker on the phone with her handler.)

He said things are too hard.

Hard to know whats true and whats lies now.

Hard to know if the economy will gut him.

If he drives for hospitality or necessity.

He says he's 65 when I ask.

It's hard to tell who's rich and who's poor.

You just have to do what you want, he tells me.

Follow your heart.

Something luck, something bootstraps.

He reads the news,

He checks his sources,

He doesn't use social media anymore.

John said he tries to keep up, but now it's too fast for him.

He's old, he says he wants to slow down.

"Maybe learn this AI thing, I'm pretty good with computers."

"Everything is hard to ignore."

Can I ask, John.

Is there a point to being reasonable like that?

Or like, rational.

Or moral. At all.

Sorry, that's like a dumb question.

I'm not gonna cry in the back of your car.

I just wonder, because.

I was just at the theater.

Everyone there was rich.

And I'm afraid I won't ever have money or anything for the rest of my life.

Though I try to be hospitable.

And I try to be creative.

And I try to have a heart.

To follow, and reason.
