Importance of batch cooking
Apart from a batch of potato and leek soup which I cooked last week, I really haven't cooked much at all. I have defrosted pizza bases, my own tomato sauce and even the capsicum and onion toppings for my pizza - all I've had to do is reach in the fridge for the cheese and olives.
I am beginning to realise how many people don't know just how much your freezer can save you thousands of dollars a year, and that's not just in the buying of meats when they're on sale. In fact, I rarely ever do that because I feel that a diet which is lower on red meats and higher in vegetables, dairy and good quality grains is much better for you. This works for me and my arse because I'm definitely not overweight and I am never hungry.
I had a chat to my friend today who is stay at omen dad and vegetarian who complained that his young family (children aged 1 & 3) have been eating out almost every day for the last few months. He has noticed a hit in their bank balance but has given up, saying that sometimes it's just easier. By the time you cook, serve it and the kids make mess, clean them up and the pile of dishes, it's just not worth the hassle!
I have to agree, but since I've been so frugally cooking most things from fresh ingredients and bulk cooking, our savings account has started to look a bit better. It's not easy being a home owner and single income family, but we manage just fine. Monster is always dressed well from my bargain hunts and she totally doesn't mind that sometimes I get her toys online and wash them up before giving them to her.
So I tried explaining to my good friend that he should also start bulk cooking and even pointed out that we have pizza every Friday night and that I prepare my dough in batches, portion it out and wrap in cling wrap before I put it in my freezer. It's almost a bit over board for me to make my own sauce and I don't do it every time, but if I need too for another recipe, I may as well double it!
I've only had time to write this blog post because my butter chicken and dhal are waiting for my rice cooker while I sip a glass of wine. I only run my dishwasher every second day when I'm not cooking every day which also saves time in stacking and unstacking and the bonus is that I'm not paying to run it. The dishwasher is my guilty pleasure and I am happy to run it as much as I have to. After all, I don't pay for a house cleaner , child care and don't have the luxury of having my mum come and help me out since I'm the one who looks after her from time to time since she's become more severely affected by Dementia.
My point here is, don't waist your time making one dinner. DOUBLE your recipe people! Freeze it! If you don't want to freeze it, just eat it for the next few days or pack it for lunches. Obviously you wouldn't double BBQ and salad as it won't keep. Unless you add a bit more meat and make a salad for lunch the next day or put the meat on your sandwiches.
Even if its not to save money bulk cook to save your time and be healthy.
Well, rice is done and time to dish up.
