“Das ist wirklich dringend, Rudolf!” Würde ein trauriges Gesicht ihn umstimmen? Sicher nicht. “Ich brauche deine Hilfe, bevor jemand erfährt was passiert ist!”
@animusviincit / @freigeiist / LETTER SC.
April 30th, 1916 Livadia, Crimea
My dear Rudolf,
I am writing you from the balcony at Livadia (our palace in Crimea, remember I showed you the photographs?) -- it is already so hot here! Such a shame the sea is cold, and I cannot go swimming; I swear, I have turned into an absolute child in those two weeks I’m at home! (Hence my awfully infantile writing, and I beg your forgiveness).
Whatever it might be, I am spending a lot of time with Little Pair and Baby; Olga has been moody as ever --- and while I feel almost like a little girl, she appears to me to have aged in spirit awfully, such an old hag!
Forgive me my immaturity again, dear, I wish I could be thorough with my writing, but really, nothing of importance is happening. Mama is well. Papa & sisters give you regards, Alexei tells me to give you special thanks for your gift, as he is enjoying it a great deal. Have you received my postcard from Moscow? I am including a couple of my recent photographs so that you do not forget how your wife looks like!
How is your Father feeling? Please tell me how your days pass by. Is it sunny in Vienna?
I am afraid I must go run some errands -- just like the old days; I did not think I would miss it so terribly. Goodbye for now, husband dear, please give regards to Father & take care of yourself.
May God be with you, Rudolf darling.
Your ever faithful wife, Tatiana +

“Your Highness, I...”, she was lost for words. Tilda had not expected to meet someone she knew. Especially not a member of the imperial family. It took her a mere heartbreak to fall into the old role though and she quickly whipped any emotion of her face, falling into a deep curtsey. “It is a surprise but also an honor to meet you here.”

❝I can PROMISE you, I know a little bit more than you about this. If anything, surprisingly I’m STILL older than you, so...watch and learn.❞

*stares back* “ … It’s good to see you, Valerie … ”
“Aww... You make it almost sound as if you mean it, Rudolf.”
"Zu Aachen in seiner Kaiserpracht Im altertümlichen Saale"
The young girl's voice quivered a little, but seeing her mother's smiling face and taking a deep breath calmed Marie Valerie enough, so that she could continue with a steady voice.
"Saß König Rudolphs heillige Macht Beim festlichen Krönungsmahle."
She did her best to not look at her brother Rudolf, who's birthday they were celebrating, instead the little girl looked past him, starring at the inlaid work on the wall behind him.
Did he like her present? Was he annoyed already? Mama had called it a good idea to recite all twelve stanzas of Schiller's poem, but Valerie was not used to having Rudolf's attention on her for such a long time. Surely Papa would like to hear a poem about the glory and piety of the great House of Habsburg. She was proud to be a member of that house. She was proud that she had managed to learn such a long poem. But now...
As the thoughts began to race each other inside her head the child stumbled upon the words that tried to leave her mouth. She had made it as far as the fourth stanza and now finally looked to her brother. Looked to him for guidance.

He took a moment to think about her observation. Not that Rudolf felt obligated to answer, but something about it caught his interest and after all he wasn’t someone who refused a good discussion.
“Perhaps you’re right.” Weren’t they all in a way? Searching for fulfillment and bliss in this life? And still the Crown Prince had never seen it as a primary goal. From a young age he’d been raised to put the empire above everything else, that his greatest wish should be to serve Austria. But his heart contained far more than that: The desire to CHANGE things, to build a better future for the people. Would it bring him happiness to see these dream become reality ( if they ever would )? “Though do you regard it as virtue or a weakness, PRINZESSIN?” Rudolf’s eyebrows perked slightly, not revealing his own thoughts with his expression.
“A virtue”, she replied without thinking. But before saying more, Tilda stopped herself. She had not even intended to blurt out that first comment, was fully aware of her disrespect in saying so, was fully aware of the fact that it was indeed Rudolf - the man she was used to despising - with whom she was conversing here… But the Prinzessin von Thal, was terrible when it came to stopping herself for long. “Happiness is something we should all long to acquire, your imperial highness, even though most of us never find themselves in the position of deserving it.” Was she being honest or being mean? Here in Vienna, it was always hard for Tilda to tell the difference. “I truly believe that an honourable man can find happiness only in the companionship of others, but…”, she shook her head, thinking of how unhappy Stephanie was right now, “Happiness is something that grows when shared, my father used to say, so it is a virtue to long for it. For in sharing happiness, we do good in the world, do we not?” And what else was left for them, caged in such an astonishing position, than to do at least something good with all they were given? For Tilda, it was either happiness or despair and since she was so used to the later it seemed only fitting to admire those that had the first.
