She wakes feeling uneasy, weighed down by the creeping sense that something isn't right. Vague memories of dreams nag at the back of her mind: fire, voices, hazy silhouettes. 

Rising quickly she crosses her room to examine her face in the mirror, breathing deeply. She looks no different than the day before, but her face doesn't seem like her own; her eyes are unfamiliar. With one hand she traces the edge of her jaw, fingers outlining the sharp and slender face reflected at her.

The world, it seems, has shifted, has gone slightly off-kilter, and left her disoriented and bewildered.

The shower helps a little, makes her feel more real and grounded, and by the time she's dressed the lingering presence of her dreams has vanished into dust in the air. 

Still, the feeling clings to her heart that something is not right.

But in the dream, of course, it's as if they never parted at all. Now it's different. There are sixteen lonely years stretching between them, and Vanda's face has grown older, and there are bright tears in her eyes as she looks across the table to meet Jean's gaze. God, she'd forgotten how soft those eyes were, how gentle the curve of her smile.

"I'm sorry," she says, and swallows hard, blinking back tears of her own. "I just can't get my head around it."

Jean ducks soaked to the bone into the cafe, her hood pulled up in vain against the storm, brushing her wet hair back from her face. "Morning," she calls, and waves to Wanda behind the counter. She's got her damp curls pulled up in an untidy ponytail, frizzing out as her hair dries; she smiles brightly nonetheless.

"Morning, Jean," she calls. "Usual?"

"Please," Jean says, and leans against the counter as Wanda starts her coffee. Footsteps run across the floor, and she looks down to see two grinning, dripping twins run over. "Morning, boys."

"I'm a leapfrog!" one of them yells, and jumps in the air to demonstrate this, his feet coming down on the floor with a sound that rattles the mugs on the shelf. He isn't wearing shoes, just mismatched socks.

"Tommy, there's enough thunder already," Wanda calls over the counter. "I don't think the sky needs any help."

It is not a large room, but comfortable, with many cupboards and cabinets of blonde wood. They stand empty now but beside the stove one holds a spice rack screwed in; below that another is fitted with hooks for oven mitts and potholders. It takes little stretch of the imagination - at least, for anyone familiar with the two women who called this house home once - to imagine someone bustling around the kitchen fixing meals.

kitty tries to bleach + dye it pink halfway through her senior year and it’s a disaster (vanda DARLING oh my god. “hmm nope we’re not going to do that”)

GOD it's so messy and bad and she wrecked it with bleach and she's like. oh no. oh no. she wears a hat for like three weeks until she has time to go into down and get it colored back to her natural color

and vanda like. she's tidying up her hair and she sees there's little bits of silver at the temples and she's like. oh i don't think so
