Les giboulées de Mars
Hey guys, Today let’s speak a bit about meteo.
We know that for most of you the wether really sucks in Lille, and we don’t blame you. However, since a week, it has been better #fingercrossed Let’s try to explain you why with a European thing, called “Les giboulées de Mars” or “April Showers” in the UK.
April showers are showers, often heavy, that fall in Spring, especially in March and April, in the northern hemisphere, particularly in the UK and Ireland, and also in France. They occur when the jet stream starts to move north in early spring letting strong winds and rain, and sometimes sleet and snow, sweep in from the Atlantic.
In France, the word giboulée means sudden, short shower often mixed with snow or sleet. Its etymology is uncertain and is possibly related to the Langue d’Oc words giboulado (shower), gibourna (to sizzle) and/or gibournado (shower). Another French word for shower is averse.
But do not worry guys, we also have a optimistic French saying: “Après la pluie, vient le beau temps” which literally means after rain comes good weather but also every cloud has a silver lining :-)
