By any chance, did anyone ever download/save a copy of Freya Ishtar's "Glass Heart" before she took it down for... I wanna say the third time?

Granted, it was all of like 6 chapters, but I really liked re-reading it for some reason.

Heyy, Shy-Aspiring-Writer here! As an author of both single pairing and multi pairing fics (I.e. tip of my tongue v. fervidity) which do you prefer to write and why? Also do you have any advice when writing either, I find myself starting to write single pairs but then with every secondary character, I’m like... woah... all three of that or four or five of that...would be hot. But I feel like I’m ruining the actual story with it so Thoughts? Also I love all your stories, you fanfic Queen!

I definitely prefer single-pairing fics, if I’m being honest. Predominantly because the dynamic is the easiest to write, and it’s the easiest to explore in the sense of a romantic and sexual relationship. When it’s just Person A and Person B are getting freaky/madly in love it’s easy to explore their personalities, their feelings for each other, and their lives.

By comparison, multi-pairings/triads/polfy-fics are HARD WORK! I really don’t recommend anyone without a background actually living a polyamorous lifestyle, or a lot of experience both as a person and a writer, attempt to tackle the dynamic. And I say this for two reasons.

First, polyamory is NOT just a whole bunch of folks tossed on a bed and all immediately comfortable and willing to get freaky together. If you can’t, as a writer, handle the dynamic that Person A, Person B, Person C, and Person D, for example, all have different shit going on - be they issues of jealous emotions over the dynamic between the other members in the relationship, feelings of insecurity/inadequacy, or just generally not being entirely comfortable with all other members of the quartet without some coaxing, and trust-building, and love (especially in the early stages) - the writing can get messy and/or wildly unrealistic.

Second, you need a foundation of writing skill to build upon if you want to handle the first reason with any kind of aptitude. If you can’t climb inside every single character you throw into the pairing and give them all the differing traits, feelings, and characterisitcs, they’re all going to read as nothing more than thirsty horn-dogs and the people of the poly community are going to be annoyed about another misrespresentation of their lifestyle. 

Polyamory is not just a group of guys and gals, be they cis/het/pan/bi/ace/gay/trans/NB, all just pounding away at each other in the bedroom, and to respresent it that way is unkind and tends to just read as bad and unrealisitic porn. 

While I do understand the urge to be writing, say Hermione and Draco getting it on and having Harry pop in and be like, “hey, mind if I join in?” it’s really not as simple as all that. Don’t get me wrong. There are times when I’m working on a scene, and I think, “You know, a little Sirius in my Snamione would be just the thing to break this tension” but it’s sooooo not that simple. We’re talking two men who abolsutley loathe each other and try to maim each other whenever they lay eyes on the other, suddenly being like, “Oh yeah, sure. Hermione is here and so hot, we’ll ignore a lifetime of hatred to get our bone on.”  (I’m dealing with this very issue in my triad marriage law fic with that three, Limerence Laws, and oh my god, it is tough.) 

It’s doable, and one of my best friends, Freya Ishtar, writes poly-fics with an unparalleled skill in my opinion, so if you really want to try your hand at it, I recommend devouring her stories (and leaving glowing reviews *winks*), and learning everything you can from the way she handles it all. But as I said, I personally prefer single-pairing stories to write, and frankly to read, as well. When I do read a poly fic without knowing on the way in that it’s poly, I do tend to find it a bit jarring and even a bit annoying. Like, I’m here for the Thormione, clear off Antonin! Or “Hey, Ron, get out of my Pots&Pans fic with your freckles and your big willy, could ya?”

Personally I tend to find even when I do read poly fics (and I confess I usually stick to Freya’s or my own) I do still tend to find myself drawn to one pairing over the others. Like, in Fevridity for example. I love writing the scenes with Hermione and Severus because they’re so intimate and detailed and there is so much tension. I like writing her with Thorfinn for the simplicity of just needing a good cleanout of the pipes, as it were. But actually writing her with Draco and Rabastan in those threesome scenes? Tricky. Complicated. I’ve got a whole other set of hands to worry about making sure that Bass doesn’t have one on Hermione’s boobs, one on Draco’s ass, and one stroking himself, because he aint’ got three, you know what I mean? The dynamic of everyone’s different emotions is fun for me to write because I like exploring the aspects of jealousy and apathy and attraction between so many different strong personalities, so it’s a challenge for me, which I like. 

But I confess that if I was still new to writing, I’d never have dared attempt a story like that because there are just too many components that rely on being able to write realistically and to build a scene with complexity, rather than just a three-second thrill of ZOMG THREESOME! You know? 

I don’t want to discourage you in the slightest, and I’m so thrilled you’ve reached out to me for some advice, but you’re right in saying that added people in a partnership, sexual or planontic, can 100% ruin a story. I tend to think of it all in the sense of that feeling you get when you find out your bestie went shopping with some other hoe you’re not fond of, or even if you love the other hoe to death, too, you’re still like “But... why didn’t they invite me?” That feeling can be one of the toughest things to throw into a triad/poly fic, but it’s one of the most important because no matter how well-adjusted we might be, humans, as a species, tend to lean toward feelings of insecurity at the slighest hint that something or someone we love might prefer someone else.
