Henry Ford Hospital (The Flying Bed)
—————————————— Frida painted this painting when she had a natural abortion that she suffered in 1932 while in the United States. We see her lying in a hospital bed, bathed in blood. Six red, thin strands surrounding her stomach, still swollen, as if they were veins or umbilical cords, that connect her body with some images that she related to the abortion. In the center and of a disproportionate size, there is the fetus of a baby boy. Frida longed to have a child and, although she never succeeded, when she spoke of the subject she referred to him as “the little Dieguito”. The violet orchid is a gift she received from Diego. The snail symbolizes a slow abortion and the figure of a woman’s torso, in which the internal organs are observed, shows the interior of a woman from her perspective (almost as if her body, which had not been able to carry out the pregnancy, I would have detached from her). She also painted a metal machine that she designed to reflect all the cold instruments used to perform a curettage. Finally her pelvis appears, which could not harbor the life that inhabited her.
