International Students Tea at Hubbard House
Today, the Hubbard house HCA (House Community Advisor) organised a panel of international Hubbardites to host a house tea to discuss the experiences and struggles of international students at Smith. I volunteered myself to be a part of the panel because I've thought a lot about my experience as an international student throughout my life in Smith for the past year and a half.
The discussions were very comfortable and meaningful. There were a lot moments when the air was tense from thoughtful comments and lively gestures in an attempt to communicate difficult emotions, as well as laughs and giggles about international students' love for food.
Even as the international student on the panel, I learned a lot about the domestic students' perspective and other international students experience. I found that fellow non-international Hubbardites are curious as well as open and accepting about the international students' narratives. Many asked us how they, as domestic students, could they help international students ease into the Smith environment. The SJE (Social Justice and Equity representatives) reached out to us for help to remind them of the cultural differences during conversations of social justice.
I was very happy that our house could have a conversation about being inclusive of international students in the Smith community. It was a great way to spend the afternoon.
