Silence. It's always starting with silence. During the time I have spent with it, I discovered that there are different types of silence.
There is the comforting one. The one that settles down after a long day filled up with noises you don't particulary enjoy or you do. It's a silence that we all need and desire from time to time. It's caressing the eardrums, it embrace us and takes off all the tiredness from the day. It's a silence we crave and love because it helps out our minds to rest, to calm down and we are able to continue the day.
Then there is the unexpected one. That comes in moments when we don't really need it and want it but it's there. When you are least expecting, this silence comes in your mind, wiping away all the other noises. And you wonder what it's happening. Your thoughts are cut off, you see but you don't hear. You feel but you don't know what. I called it static silence. Because you can almost hear it inside your head. You can feel it in your body, the way it makes you slightly cold like during a chilly spring night when you forgot to take your jacket and the cold is barely licking at you but you feel it as little insects crawling up your skin. This silence might stay for a while but it also might go away as fast as it came.
And then there is the deafening one. The one that rips your eardrums apart with how loud it is. The one that screams louder than any other noise. It doesn't use words. It doesn't come slowly. It explodes, like fireworks during the spring festivals. When you are sitting alone and lonely it comes and grips at your throat, paralyzing you, choking you. You can feel it squeezing the life out of you but you are powerless against it cause it's the silence we all fear the most. It's the one that laughs at us when we least need it. It's always there when we need noise and words. But this silence is taking it all away. Mercilessly. Cruely. You want to escape. You try to escape but nothing works. But you know that. You know that nothing can beat this silence. You know that there is nothing you can do. The only thing is to let it consume you. To let it flow in your body like a deadly poison and pray that you will survive. And at one point you even catch yourself loving this silence. Needing it. Wanting it. I have always wondered why. Why do I need it? Why do I crave for it? The answer is not that hard, isn't it? Because this is all you've got. Despite the horror, despite the timeless, airless dimension you find yourself throw into, you don't really try to escape it because at least there you feel something. This silence might go on for hours, days, weeks and yet you stay. Paralyzed and scared but you also relax. You let it take over because you fucking feel again. And you cling to it like a life saving boat. You grip it and don't let go because you know damn well that this is all you've got. Because otherwise you are alone. Completely and utterly alone.
